looks great Danny!

what sort of effect if any is there on flow with the sensors in the way? i assume its not of concern or else you wouldn't be doing it.

Just out of interest Danny, why the two CDI drivers? Isn't the Pro-16 a 6 channel driver?

Progress looks awesome as always!

They're definitely not a flow concern James. There will be some more significant (not detrimental) flow restrictions in the cooling system as I distribute the coolant flow to specific areas of the engine.

Cheers,
Danny

Thanks Tim.

You need two, one for leading spark control and one for trailing spark control. Refer to page 12 of this document http://www.mwignitions.com/pdf/Pro16_S3.pdf

How Much has this thing cost ?

Postby oztrackdays » Sun Nov 03, 2013 9:31 pm

I am all for bride of Frankenstein Cars.

Have you really spent 5 years getting a Rotard engine in an MX5 ?

You could have spent 5 weeks installing the LS1 it would
handle better and I doubt be any slower.

20B-REW weight = 350kg (fully dressed)
Chevy LS1 weight = 226kg (fully dressed)

Considering a fully Built 2.5 engine will get to 160+ rwkw and a Supercharged 2.0 gets to 180 rwkw
I struggle to see the point of this, other than brap brap soundtrack.

Looking forward to seeing the times this thing lays down, I hope they are as mega as the sticker shock.
and worth the wait.

Thanks for clearing that up, I bet their marketing department were the ones that decided to still call it 6 channel!

"Because he can" would be the simplest explanation, I'm sure Danny has a more detailed one.

So could / have a lot of people, but i'm loving how Danny is researching and designing each part, it's a skill i'm deeply envious of.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

7 years actually! If you've got some time to burn read the thread from the beginning through to about page 33 and you would get a reasonable understanding of why the darn build has taken so long. Basically...it wasn't a high priority project.

Simply, rotary engines not piston engines are my passion. My business partner and his son put an LS2 (internally bog stock and made 284rwkW) in his RX-8 over a few weeks as V8's are his passion. I've dríven it and the result just didn't do it for me. :| The good news is he doesn't hate me for not loving it!

I have completed both engine builds you mention above....and neither will give me the result I'm after. The power result with the 20B PP should be around the 320rwkW mark....but keep in mind this is only a small part of the reason for selecting a 20B as the power plant. I could have quite easily put a 13BT in it with over 400rwkW, but that engine specification compromised other aspects of the vehicle's design. Yes, I definitely do love the brap brap with a passion! :P

I'm sure I'll be over the moon with the result and after 7+ years, it will definitely be worth the wait. Thanks for your concerns.

Cheers,
Danny

I missed that one Dave.

I appreciate that Dave. It's not so much about the end result, it's more so about the path taken to get there. There's certainly been the odd dead-end and roundabout over the last 7 years. I've learnt so much and there is still so much to learn.

Cheers,
Danny

My build has taken 1/7 of Danny's duration, however never have truer worlds been spoken about a car build. Each time I visit Plus to see my build I'm always drawn towards Danny's build, not fair :)

I'm still inching along at the moment by sorting out some minor details.

To suit the shorter ID1000 fuel injector length I had to redesign the fuel rail restraint brackets.

...and I started assembling the throttle linkages.

Another minor detail which is more about presentation than anything else were the blanking plates for the no-longer-required side ports. The side ports will be filled with Devcon prior to engine assembly.

The laser cut components for the mount assembly also arrived this week all pressed and ready for welding.

Ta-da! :P

The fun part will getting the mounting on the firewall about the passenger footwell.

The first part of the wiring loom install was undertaken with the fitting of the plate and bulkhead fittings to the firewall.

Image

Image

To give more room for the looms as they extend out into the engine bay I've relocated the coil bracket assembly. This will tidy the engine bay up quite a bit.

The last thing done this week was the removal of the windscreen wiper motor assembly that once resided here. There's a couple of kg's in that!

I don't really car how fast this ends up around the track but just from an engineering / attention to detail perspective...simply mind blowing!

Thanks Apu. :D As Magpie acknowledged earlier...for me it's been more about the path(s) taken than the end result.

However, I'm pretty sure that I'll never find out how quick she can go around the track as I'll definitely be the handbrake! :P

Danny

I was just thinking you might have got some bum advice but if it's all a self inflicted project then no problem.

This car will end up having cost more than a V8 radical by the time you are done and you won't get
within 80% of the performance but as you state journey is more important than destination and
it's a long journey you get to enjoy.

Congratulations on the ingenuity.
