Hi Everyone,
I frequently read about people having differences in the AFR reading in MS Tunerstudio and the gauge that typically comes with your chosen wideband controller (WBC). I am no different here. There is a lot of information ensuring that you have common grounding with the WBC and the MS ECU etc. and yes this information is valid and should be followed, but what if the reading is still wrong or believed to be wrong.
One thing to bare in mind is that the refreshing of the gauges may not happen at exactly the same speeds, so how can you tell if you reading is off and what can you do about it.
(I have an Innovate LC-1 - There is a lot of bad press out there for these, but mine has been solid from day one and is 4 years old now.)
NOTE - this will help you get your megasquirt AFR reading calibrated against your WBC external gauge. IT does ensure the accuracy of either. I would recommend taking a second reference point for comparison, eg AFR taken from a dyno tune. IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE AFR READING IS CORRECT YOU CANNOT RELIABLY TUNE YOUR CAR!!! You have been warned.
When you calibrate the AFR in tuner studio the default for an LC-1 are
1v = 9.7
4v = 18.7
Hopefully your WBC has 2 outputs to allow you to follow these steps.
Step 1
Set Calibrate the AFR in tunerstudio to the defaults for your controller.
Step 2
- turn the ignition on (don't forget to un plug the coils)
- Set WBC outputs 1 and 2 so that
1v = 7.35
1v = 22.39
- turn the ignition off and back on again
- take a note of the AFR reading on the external controller gauge (Mine had 10.2 on).
- hook up your laptop to MS and open tunerstudio
- Calibate the AFR using the custom linear WB to
1v = Your recorded value from above = 10.2 in my case
4v = 18.7
- Tunerstudio's AFR should now read the same as your external gauge, 10.2 in my case.
Step 3
- Set WBC outputs 1 and 2 so that
4v = 7.35
4v = 22.39
- turn the ignition off and back on
- take a note of the AFR reading on the external controller gauge (Mine had 18.9 on).
- hook up your laptop to MS and open tunerstudio
- Calibate the AFR using the custom linear WB to
1v = Your recorded value from step 2 = 10.2 in my case
4v = Your recorded value from this step = 18.9 in my case
- compare the tunerstudio AFR with the external gauge, if they match great, goto step 5, if not follow step 4.
Step 4
- In tunerstudio calibrate the AFR using the custom linear WB setting to
1v = Your recorded value from step 2 = 10.2 in my case
4.05v = Your recorded value from this step = 18.9 in my case
- check the tunerstudio AFR against against your external gauge
- repeat the above adjusting the voltage by 0.05 increments up or down until the gauges match.
- take note of your final settings, just in case you need them again if you load firmware of something
Step 5
- Now we will validate that you new calibration is correct.
- Set WBC outputs 1 and 2 so that
2v = 7.35
2v = 22.39
- turn the ignition off and back on
- Tunerstudio and your external AFR gauge should read the same values
- Set WBC outputs 1 and 2 so that
3v = 7.35
3v = 22.39
- turn the ignition off and back on
- Tunerstudio and your external AFR gauge should read the same values
- if your values are different return to step 4 and make a very small adjustment to voltage, 0.01 at a time.
Step 6
- Set WBC outputs 1 and 2 to the factory defaults
- turn the ignition off and back on
- and enjoy
Ok, that is it. Hopefully this can work for you as it did for me.
Si.

Thanks Si,
I have a feeling this might come in very handy in the near future.

Re: MS2 Wideband Calibration (Innovate LC-1)
Good post. Going to try this when I get home, as the difference between the gauge and MS2 is irritating me. Don't forget to ensure your grounding / sensor wires are correctly coupled to your MS2 before doing this .
