People Reading Your Build Thread in the Garage Chat section

Not trying to be a dick or anything like that, just a general question.

What content needs to be posted to on my thread in the Garage Chat section to get people reading it. I update it pretty much every week with stuff like roll cage, CAI, clutch etc. and get 0 replies. But in other threads old mate will change his brake light and get 5 replies.

Is it just an age gap difference, where my "stanced" styled mx5 isnt interesting to the concours style of other members on this forum.


Remember I'm not trying to be a dick, just a general question to see what people on this forum like to see in build threads.

Feel free to voice your opinion, everybody is entitled to.

Stance is... masturbation, in my opinion. The blunt truth is that my teen brother could build your car in a single day with very little instruction and a lend of my toolbox.

Bolt some boost on and ask for, or give, technical advice, I'll be there in a flash

I think garage threads get the most interest when the owner does unusual/difficult/interesting things.
If its just the standard slammed et 0 ebay rims and a pod filter, its not very captivating or individual.
(not thats yours is, just an example.)

Write ups and tutorials and diagrams to show what you have done.

I think of a garage thread as documenting what you are doing and people posting comments/feedback is secondary. However, Dann does make a point in that it depends what people are interested enough to make a comment. Just keep updating your thread, if you type it they will come

NitroDann: I completely understand what you are saying, yes my car could be built in a day I admit that. Between full time work, part time work, and full time Tafe I haven't had much time at all to get stuck into the car. Planning to strap some boost onto it next year once I have sold all my gear from a previous project.

Emily_mx5: Just showing a bit of background on myself and car history, completely understand what your saying though about being individual.

I understand that it;s nice when people chat to you in your garage thread, it's a place where people don;t bitch about it being off topic, because it is your thread. So ask questions, start chatting, do writeups, show people the effort and detail you went to achieve something, etc.

The most interesting threads have personality. They aren't just photos or text. They display pride, achievements, ideas, mistakes and humor.
There's not much that hasn't already been done and it can sometimes feel like you are just re posting what others have done before you. But this is where adding personality creates interest.

Keep posting mate, I'm a regular reader and have posted a couple of times. I'll read most garage threads as you never know where inspiration will come from. Keep up the good work

I tend to read a lot of the garage threads to see what people are doing, get some ideas and provide useful information if it's something I'm familiar with or feel strongly about. I particularly like reading any "Lesson's Learned", both good and bad since they can change my mind about how to do a mod and whether or not it is worth doing at all (eg. I once thought the Start button was a cool idea but after reading comments from people who did it, the novelty wears off quick and it wasn't worth the hassle).

Everyone's tastes/goals are different so generally if what you're doing in your garage thread doesn't appeal to someone they wont comment and if they're not interested in where it's heading will not visit it again.

You'll see a lot more clashes of opinions/personalities in the non-garage threads, they're more "open for discussion" and provide some of the best information.

eg. I think 17" rims are ridiculous on an NA/NB but I'd never "diss" anyone in their garage thread about it (unless they specifically ask for opinions), it's their car and their thread so I keep out of it.

Lack of comment doesn't necessarily translate to lack of views either. I read through a lot of garage threads but don't make many comments.

+1. I love reading build threads; for me they're the best part of the forum (not really interested in other's off topic, often misguided opinions). The Garage Chat is great for inspiration, shared knowledge and often amusement. I also don't mind the random lifestyle photos thrown in build threads. They all add to the car culture aspect.

I'm not one to frequently give feedback on build threads, but perhaps more comments will encourage more posts...

another issue is people do these theads for is e-points...

its not about how many reads you've had in your thread, its about quality.

As a genuine cardigan-wearing, left-lane-driving, right-indicator-always-on NC owner, I tend to only bother reading the NC build threads.
And there ain't that many of 'em.
