^ I have to agree with Dweezle, drive one with and without and make up your own mind.

Re: Going to get my first mx5
My NA is the first non PS car I've had since 1996
I think it's perfect.
Having said that I don't know if PS would make it worse or better.
I just think it's fine without PS.

Re: Going to get my first mx5
My wife use to drive my NA6 without power steering and never found it heavy or awkward and she's fussy.
That said, I like the power steering in my NB.

Re: Going to get my first mx5
Yea will definitely have to drive one and see
Coming from the FN, the P/S NA seems a bit light on the steering, will be test driving one without it tomorrow
There's this mod plated turbocharged NA6 (not the one I posted up previously), from the pic it looks tidy and all. The thing that bugs me are that the current owner bought the car mod plated from the previous owner, thus; he doesn't know much about what has been changed. The car is currently running with stock ECU at about 5psi (It is a GT28 turbo). He doesn't know if the diff has been changed but he assumed it was as is mod plated (I know there are places in QLD who do dodgy place, soooo). Anyone know how to check if it has an LSD on it? With my understanding if you jack the car up and rotate one side of the wheel and if the other side follows the same rotation then it definitely has an LSD, on the other hand if it rotates opposite direction, it can either be the stock diff or LSD, PLS correct me.
What are your thoughts on this? Seeing that is turbocharged, it would be harder to tell if the engine is healthy since I can't really compared it to a healthy N/A na6.

Re: Going to get my first mx5
In a car such as the mx5, you'd soon forget about power steering.
Power steering tends to dumb down the feel of being one with the driver car.
You'll find that you'll feel every bump and dip in the road channelled through the steering wheel. Not a lot, but enough to get a really authentic go-kart feeling.
You get a really good sense of speed and feedback without PS.
In my NB, I tend to find myself accidentally wandering higher than the speed limit, and I attribute that to the power steering making driving and maneuvering so smooth and effortless.
I agree with the above posts. Go for a drive with and without power steering to make up your mind. Either way, there will be no regrets or "what ifs".
Dan.

Test compression, and listen to the whole drivetrain with keen ears. As stated above, these cars can run boost with enormous reliability, so it's still a matter of chance. I'd be more inclined to think an n/a NA would have a less healthy engine as higher RPMs and a heavier foot are more necessary to get anywhere quickly.

Will have to get a compression gauge tomorrow then, and will be test driving it tomorrow as well (can't wait)
Anyone have any idea with inspecting if LSD has been installed?

Re: Going to get my first mx5
My na6 diff is stock. When I turn one rear wheel the other doesn't know about it.
LSD will turn the other one too.
If you want to test it the procedure goes like this.
Left foot pressed down on clutch.
Gear lever in 1
Right foot down on accelerator pedal till rev guage is pointing at 6
Left foot step to the left.
Now go back and check if you see a number one or eleven painted in the road.
Ps. I didn't think you could have any psi with a stock ecu

The easiest way is to look at the diff. http://www.miata.net/garage/diffguide/ torsen diffs act like an open diff when one wheel is of the ground so I wouldn't reply on the spinning the wheels method.

This is very bad, it's very unlikely to be done properly or reliable.
This is... Its just not on, to run boost even at low boost with a stock ecu, the stock ecu has no idea what boost even is.

What about if they did it SE style and boosted into the afm / maf? Sure it's not ideal but aren't the stock ecu pretty rich up top?

As much as this hurts and considering Dann's normal bedside manners, I would listen when it is about a turbo and he says bad!

Re: Going to get my first mx5
Pulling up an older thread, but I wanted to get my thoughts into this since no one gave this point of view.
Non PS is more for you if you like the go-kart feeling for the car. It makes any and every minute of driving the car feel more... challenging. Like others have said, you feel every bump, every little thing. It does get a bit more difficult for tight parallel parking but if you are buying an NA you aren't there for heated seating or a spacious cabin anyway.
The only times I wished I had power steering funnily enough is on the track, to easier control the car. Sometimes you need to act quickly with the steering wheel and with Non PS you might have a harder time controlling it. At least for me it is.
On normal road driving, non PS makes everything fun. I'd recommend it 100%
