Thoughts on this set-up to start with.....

Postby miatas76 » Fri Oct 25, 2013 1:30 pm

Hey all!

take out the $$ factor here (i'll worry about that later lol) i'm looking to see if this setup would be any different to what could be obtained locally (both interstae and in Brisvegas).... and before anyone asks.... it will never have a snail attached but some light cams could come later...

NA6
jackson racing intake
maxim works headers
fujitsubo legalis R muffler
not sure on everything else in between these bits yet....

thoughts?

What is your end goal? Light cams?

Full Racing Beat (header/exhaust)

The end goal is a shopping list of hektik stance-tier parts, right?

Okay, now Im being harsh, OP if you want performance, that is NOT the way to do it.

Hi op,

Dann is 100% correct even though he was rude about it.
-The intake wont add any performance what so ever, only looks (i know I've had a JR intake)
-The exhaust system is really there for sound, you will notice some minor power increase(think very small)
-Cams will provide the biggest power increase pending on the type of cams you select.
-Money will always be a factor in your decision making so don't be foolish.

For half the price, you could get the same performance without the JDM mark up.

You need the intake and FULL (headers high flow cat, midpipe straight through muffler) exhaust system to take advantage of cams, but on their own they are worth 10hp or so only, maybe 12 on an excellent day.

Alone the value is very poor, with a set of decent sized cams (none of this tiny 256* tomei rubbish) you start making decent power gains, say 25whp and then it becomes ok value per dollar.

The parts you listed are good quality, are they the best? not even close.

Hi.
Get the cylinder head modified with higher compression a full exhaust system, intake and start there. If at a later date you want cams the engine is ready to take full advantage of them. Be careful with cam sizing - talk to the camshaft supplier. Send me a pm if you want details of the head guy in brisbane and yes he uses a flow bench.

hehehehe just the type of responses i thought i'd get by starting this post :)

All good Dann i expected you to be harsh, just wanted to prompt some honest opinions. Advice is what i'm after on what parts are the best and can they be sourced locally.... cams and extra hp have always appealed but if/when i do this, i want it done once and be happy.

The car's done 225,000km's now, still as stock as a bog internally, but is starting to show signs of needing a freshen up and to breathe a little better. More HP would be great but not at the sacrifice of reliability. I'm certainly not looking for a firebreathing monster nor am i after a rice burning tin rattling buzz box.

Make it sound nice, feel good, breathe well, go good (and hard when needed) and i'll be as happy a chappy as i've been the last 16 years i've owned it. I'm no traffic light racer, just a guy who loves his car and wants to keep it going for many more years.

Cams and a full exhaust seem the way to go.... pricing on a full RB system from the States seems no cheaper than most other parts from Japan. as long as you look hard enough, there's bargains out there i'm sure. i'd just rather do it locally if possible.

If you are serious about a natural aspirated build (and you are in Brisbane) have a chat with MX5 Plus as they have built mine (and it is almost finished). Another source for natural aspirated is Wozzah on this forum. There is a lot of information and miss-information out there so it pays to do your research before you part with any cash. Make a plan, set a realistic budget (and double it) and go from there. Whilst I was frustated deciding on the direction I wanted to go, I'm glad it took over 12 months (and many conversations/emails) to finally decide the engine build.

The size cam you can use will be restricted if you stay with the stock ECU. An aftermarket ECU will allow a greater range of cam choices.

A good intake, exhaust and ecu will net you 20% increase in power, and a much better soundtrack.

Good local stuff can be had from ces on the Southside. Maxim works headers are staying to come up at reasonable prices locally.
