Re: Cheap forced induction?
When you have a good look at a turbo charger you will see the tolerances are very small and the unit will spin very efficiently. The blades both on the exhaust side and inlet side have a small amount of overlap and the pitch of the blades is more aggressive than the pitch of the blades on the ebay unit.
This is much like the propeller on a boat. The blade producing the compressed air is relative to the power of the device creating the drive (motor on a boat, electric motor for ebay unit or exhaust gas on a turbo charger). If the 2 items are not balanced you will get a poor result (turbo lag or not enough boost at the top of the rev range).
So, yes the concept is the same but the electric motor on this unit would not be strong enough to drive a similar turbo set up to create equal air pressure. When you look at the ebay link you will see the blades have little pitch and no lip on the trailing edge to accelerate the air. I would think the fan would only be cable of spinning to the same speed as the air going through the intake from the suction effect of the motor.
Don't waste your hard earned dollars. It is not worth it.

I understand that some companies are working on a product of (very very) roughly the same style. I.e. a turbo powered by electricity. I think the theory is that you power the turbo using waste heat rather than flow. Obviously this is a very serious and somewhat speculative engineering project not something you buy off ebay for $100.
exhaust gas is waste no? (no engineer here, its a question)

If you disclude possible scavenging. Yes. also a significant percentage of the combustion is still occurring when the exhaust valves open.

Biggest scam out there. I can't believe they are allowed to sell these and claim they do what they say. I don't understand how marketing products works but I'm sure when you claim a product can do this and that and cannot tick even one of the boxes it lists, then it's some form of false advertising.

Here's some sauce for my comment, obviously it's far better than my memory:

If recently-uncovered patent filings are correct, BMW is working on an electrically-assisted turbocharger that combines a traditional turbo with an electric motor-generator. If it works, the system will let smaller engines produce more power, while performing virtually lag-free...

Re: Cheap forced induction?
I fitted one on my (B)MX, connected to a small 9 volt battery.
The performance gain was noticeable as the breeze it provided kept me cooler while pedalling at full speed.

How about some theoretical engineering between friends...
Now.... What if you were to get your hands on a centrifugal supercharger with a little pulley... A decent big 'nuff (is it 24v) dc motor on a big big pulley... Mounted firmly in the bay somewhere with two thick cables leading to the big capacitor found in your friendly neighborhood 2014 Mazda 3 Iloop.... 10 seconds of push to passssss has to beat a poofteenth fuel economy.... Surely

Capacitor only in M6 afaik.

Re: Cheap forced induction?
I know the title says cheap forced induction and the following is not exactly cheap but it does show that electric forced induction is effective and is cheaper than a dedicated turbo/supercharger. It doesn't produce the same results though but is nothing to be sneezed at.

Re: Cheap forced induction?
This was a while ago, and to be fair 30hp is such a small gain compared to a traditional turbo setup its just silly to even consider spending the money. The fact that the tech sort of works is cool, but thats all, its not really viable yet.

Re: Cheap forced induction?
I agree Dann that it is not really a viable alternative to a turbo in terms of power or torque. But 30hp and 50ft/lb with proven dyno charts for a kit that is a work in progress shows that the electric superchargers may have a future and not just be relegated to ebay junk.
The big plus though is the ease of installation and more importantly un-installation for those that care about warranty. The ability to completely remove everything in hardly any time at all would appeal to some who just want a little more oomph.
I'd expect the technology to improve and come down in price once a few others enter the market.
There is also a group of people who are taking a DIY approach to further reduce prices. The turbine is always going to be a bit pricey new but if a 2nd hard turbo cold side could be used....hmm..anyway. I'll be sticking to turbo myself. :-)

That is farking amazing. My mind is blown.
