I'm going to look at a low k t28bb but the guy called it a disco potato. How can I tell if its a 2850 or a 2560?

You have to take the housings off and measure. it looks exactly like every OEM Gt2560r I have ever seen, in the pictures.

The disco potato was designed for a miata so it's pretty suitable.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

T25/T28 refers to the rear wheel then the next two numbers are the front wheel. CA18 S13 had a T2554 and the SR S13 had a T2560 both the same OD rear wheel but a larger front wheel. Later models eg. S15 had a GT2860, a GT ( ball bearing) 28 (T28 rear) and 60 (60mm front wheel).
To add to that the wheels have a "trim" which is defined as the inducer/exducer.
FYI a T2560 from and SR S13 is quite a nice fit on a 1.6 however as Dan mentioned above, one of the only situations you may be able to make use of the T2554 would be motorkhana. If you are looking at the tiny and super responsive then you could probably have a look at the GTR turbos too, there are quite a few different ones but most have a T25 rear and around a 56mm front wheel. As a rough guide I would expect to pay in the region of $300 or less for any of the above.

Gtr turbos are useless in single form. Don't waste your money.
If you want T2x based stick to SR20 turbos. Gtir turbo is biggest of that bunch..
If you want cheap T3 based turbos, then skyline gtst turbos are cheap and anything from the r32 gtst up has ball bearing turbos. But ceramic exhaust wheels.

I went and checked out this T28BB.
It did have a plate on the Chra tha was just so caked with dirt the guy hadn't seen it. It was a GT2560R when I ran the part number but the guy claimed it had only done 8000km and I just don't believe him.
In the last three months I've only seen 2 2554s for sale and both were over $800 and still no idea what came with them as stock.
So price and availability would dictate I should just get a T25. But it seems that any advantage of the lower rpm spool of the small turbo would be negated by the reduced lag of the BB 2560.
I guess what I'm asking is:
If I can't find a 2554 as my instant boosting turbo, is there any reason to look at the T25 or is the 2570 just as responsive down low with more up top to boot?
Or have I been sucked in by the BB hype?
I don't know, Im tired of sifting through endless Nissan forum posts and just want to go to bed.

What he said. I also have a 1.6 turbo project, also with standalone MS2 and also confused as to the best turbo for my requirements.
Do the 4 bolt / 6 bolt turbos share similar interfaces (flanges, oil piping etc) enabling easy switchover between turbos? Or will it require building new exhaust manifolds each time a t25 / 28 is switched over ?

I posted the part numbers on the previous page which have been confirmed by Nissan directly.

It's a while since I have played with these turbos but I just had a quick search and it looks like the s15 is a 25 rear, it is listed at 53.0mm where a t28 would be 53.9mm. If you find any turbos just try to do a google search for specs/dimensions based on the part number, all the garrets I have seen have a small alloy plate on the CHRA with the numbers on.
I used to run an s13 turbo on my 1.6 and that was pretty quick to spool up especially when using launch control, that worked quite well for motorkhana. The great thing about the s13 is that they go for around $200 pretty well any day of the week for a good one, so even through they are journal bearing the price and availability in case of a failure pretty well makes up for the slight difference in spool.
I am now running a GT2871R on a 1.8 and that spools pretty quick too but nothing like the S13 turbo did. Before the S13 turbo on the 1.6 I had a GT2556 from a R34 GTR, now that was quick but the flow or lack thereof limited the top end considerably.
