Front mount oil cooler, like the look?

Postby jesseturbo » Thu Oct 17, 2013 7:25 pm

Hi guys, just wanting a general opinion on oil cooler placement. I'm a massive shakotan/bosozoku fan and love the whole front mount oil cooler look. I'm considering mounting mine to the side off the number plate bracket and routing the oil lines up through one of the TSI's. Just wondering what people would think of this from a purely aesthetic point of view? I love the look but my only fear is the NA MX5 body is too rounded to pull it off, particularly in the nose. Please don't tell me I'm going to get raped with defects, an oil cooler is the least of my worries. Thoughts?

love love love boso, but i think the rest of the car has to have the other ridiculous aspects to pull it off.

Well it's got the stance for it I think, wheels will probably work with the look too. In the near future it's going to have a set of rivet on over fenders and some rather concave Watanabe's so that may tie in a little better too. A bit further down the track it'll receive a set of the Project G "g fuser" side lips/flares as well. Other than that the body is stock apart from a roof lip and front indicator delete/TSI's.

Methinks you already know the answer to this.

I truly think the one shown on the blue car is a bit of overkill IMHO. I mean, I get the bit coming out of the RHS front part of the car... but what's that massive PUMP for? - and why is it pumping the oil up that great big pipe? - it looks more like some serious cooling is taking place - is it REALLY necessary? What's under the bonnet of this car - a nuclear reactor? And think about how much OIL you're gonna need to fill that sucker.

Nah... I'd go for something simpler and more elegant.

And what will happen if a rock gets thrown up, cracks the oil cooler and oil spills onto the road right in front of your steer tyre? A case of form over function, however if it makes you happy don't let anybody spoil your fun :)

What are you running under the bonnet to actually required that sort of oil cooling?

I also assume that you have some indicators and headlights left to install? Being a P plater WILL get you attention especially with no front indicators.

Headlights are fine, I'm going to be running a set of mini motorcycle LED indicators in the corners of the opening. At the moment the engine is stock except for a set of Racing Beat headers and exhaust, but now that it's getting warmer it's really suffering with heat in the mountains so along with a decent radiator it's just there as a bit of cheap insurance heat wise. That and I'm slowly gathering parts for an ITB NB6 engine build. I've got everything setup and good to go intake wise, just a few little odds and ends, an ECU and the actual motor to go. The intention is to bump up the compression quite a bit, slap some forged internals in it, silly nasty cams, head work etc. Obtain all the fuel and air!

What have your oil temps been to date? Your killer now (apart from the fines from defect notices and parking violations) is going to be catastrophic oil pressure loss so I suggest an alarm to warn you as you will have only a very short period to shut the car down (unless you run an acumulator which gives you a very small safety margin of about 3 ltrs).

Good luck on the ITB build. What compression are you going for?

Taking this car to the next Downshift event?

- cops are going to be licking their lips when they see you coming/leaving (mongrels - one of the reasons I wont attend an event in my car).

From a legal and practical perspective (see Magpie's comments), this mod is a dumb idea.

I'm not stupid enough to street the car like this, it was mounted there for the photos only. It's permanent mount position will be inside the bumper, with some ducting and possibly a switchable thermo fan. Other than obviously being illegal, I would be chewing my nails to the bone at the slightest hint of gravel on the road. It's only going to be mounted like this on a track, for photos and at events, not streeted.
