Hit pothole - 2 damaged original wheels on NB 1998 - advice?

Postby aSimpleLife » Sat Oct 19, 2013 5:13 pm

Sorry for creating a new post, but can't seem to find the advice I was looking for.

Sadly I've hit a pothole and bent both wheels on the passengers side.
Even more sad is I'd recently purchased a new set of RE002's (195/50R15), less than a 1,000km's and one if not both are stuffed as well.
So after 30 years of driving, in the nicest car I've ever owned (original, low km, 1 owner), running the most expensive tyres I've ever bought, I've done this for the first time...what a loser :(
I'm surprised at the damage I did, at about 80kmh on a sweeping bend, but it did hit hard, and jarred loose the passenger side the soft top roof clamp.

First question is, am I likely to have damaged more than just the wheels?
And how will I know?

Secondly, am trying to decide if I replace the 2 wheels, or buy a new set of wheels?
It's a very original car and I hadn't been planning to modify it all.
Assume if I stick with the original wheels it'll keep the cars value more?
Either way, any suggestions on best way to source either replacement or new wheels? (haven't done either before)
I'm in Melbourne out East. Can travel (in the other vehicle :)

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance.

You can repair the wheels if you wish.

Thanks very much for the response.
My tyre place had told me I couldn't...so that was all I had to go by.
Can you suggest anywhere?
I'll start my search again for that now thanks.

OK, found this thread and looks like Neway Wheel Repairs in Heidelberg West, Melbourne VIC could be worth a shot at around $80 each.

Thanks again for putting me on another track.

Don't feel too bad, the BEST car I ever owned before the MX5 was a Lexus IS200 Sports Luxury - one large pothole, splayed the front end and creased the roof in FOUR places! It was raining, you could not see the pothole yet the Shire effectively said 'Your problem'

When I rang them that night and asked them to close the road before someone was in injured or worse, it was a flippant 'No'. If a Suzuki 4x4 had hit the same hell knows what would have happened

All the best and I hope you get it sorted

If your new tyres were fitted by Bridgestone, you should be covered under their road hazard warranty.

Probably cheaper to buy a new pair of original rims.
Up your tire pressures to avoid damage.

Thanks very much for the heads up on that. They were fitted at Bridgestone. And they have less than 10% wear.
But according to the terms and conditions I had to fill in this warranty at time of purchase - which I didn't.

I'll give it a shot Monday anyway.

Well it was raining...and it was dark...and it was late I wasn't concentrating as hard as I could have...so only have myself to blame.
Am tossing up trying the council...the tyre place said several claims have been successful recently...if over $1000?...but maybe they were just trying to distract me from the Bridgestone Safe Drive Warranty :)

Thanks for the kind words...but I'm still a loser though :)

As in contact Mazda for replacement rims from 1998? Sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

I had them on 35psi. Should I have them higher than that?

Thankyou.

You may be able to pick up a couple of straight used NB wheels that someone no longer wanted. 36 psi is far to high IMO anyway. any higher will shake your teeth out.

That's all good JBT, if that happens I've box a special felt lined box to put them in! Just don't smile at people passing by!

With the KU36's, Option 1 Garage suggested 34psi as a minimum .. with mine they both certainly do not feel 'hard' on the road and the NB handles perfectly on the track

I used to run 40psi in my Corolla Sportivo normal driving and on a trip 42psi - that was the recommended

That a council might ignore or refuse a claim doesn't necessarily mean there is no claim. Ir merely means they ignored or refused that particular claim.
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)
