Mechanic woes
This post is not so much a call for any help, as this kind of engine issue is almost impossible for someone at a distance to call. More of a venting of today's frustration really ...
Today I took my NB to the mechanics. Was originally only going to my local, but his answer didn't really fill me with confidence, so off to another for a second opinion, who proceeded to confuse me further and by the third I was ready to throttle someone.
For quite a while, my NB8A's engine has had a knocking sound at cold start up that goes away in a couple of seconds as oil pressure comes up. It's similar to the way the NA HLA rattle works but this is a deeper, heavier sound and these are solid lifters. It's been present now through two oil and filter changes. Plugs and leads have also been changed during that time. I've worked out it's from the rear of the engine, quite loud with screwdriver to my ear and on rocker cover, but it's been difficult so far for me to tell if more pronounced from top or bottom of engine. The engine's always very quiet at idle and through the lower revs, but knocks again under acceleration at 3000 rpm ... fine under deceleration ...
All three mechanics had a good listen and short drive to hear under load ...
Mech 1 says it's oil leak back, probably due to a faulty oil filter as they've had a few faulty ones recently ...
Mech 2 says it's probably piston slap, could be end bearings, but probably not, as it would probably have packed in by now, so just put up with the noise until it gets a lot worse then bring it back ... an awful lot of "probable's" ... anyway, not being very mechanically minded, I had never heard of piston slap and had to Google that one
Mech 3 says it's a worn cam ...
Now, some credit where it's due - not one of them charged me anything even though I asked each what I owed them for their time ...
However ... only conclusion after a day of driving from mechanic to mechanic ... I need a drink ...
Feels better ... off to open a bottle of red ....

Re: Mechanic woes
Why dont you just put an oil pressure guage on it and see if it correlates with pressure then investigate the things that needs pressure?

Re: Mechanic woes
Some 1999/2000 NBs had a problem with #4 thrust bearing failure. http://www.miata.net/solo/99miatathrustbearingfailure.html
Hopefully it's not your problem.

If only NB's had a decent oil pressure gauge ...
Have read the mods for a "proper" gauge in NB's like the NA6's. Any other method to do this?

Re: Mechanic woes
Buy a gauge and put it on, if its just for testing just plug it in and watch it.

Hmmm ... thanks, interesting. Hadn't read that one. One positive that appears to offset mine is mostly early failure - under 20k but something to consider.

OK, do you mean just an ordinary dash type oil gauge (plus proper sender) or a special tool that plugs/screws in? Sorry Dann, haven't done this before ...

Re: Mechanic woes
Yeah just go to supercheap and get a gauge.

Thanks Dann ...
While spending the $ I may as well get what I need to properly replace the useless on/off switch & gauge in the instrument panel

Re: Mechanic woes
Yeah research and do the swap
A real gauge is nice.

Re: Mechanic woes
Following up ... my suspicions have been confirmed ... big end bearing (#4 cyl)
So...qas told it is still fine to drive and could stay that way for a long time as long as don't go nuts on revs and keep an eye (ear ) on it. Been like this since April and I've done 3,000kms with it knocking without getting any worse. It's not a loud knock, just enough to be annoying at higher revs.
Looks like time to start considering some options ...

D'oh, it's probably that #4 thrust bearing thing.

I mentioned that to him and he's pretty sure it's not.
After having a really long, good chat on picking the car up (great to find an "interested" mechanic!) about my servicing habits etc - oil changes, what the old oil looked like, any metal showing, my driving style, how hard I rev etc etc - and adding the fact that it hasn't got any worse over 3,000 kms despite some attempts by me to "kill or cure" he also added consideration of possibly the gudgeon pin, another known fault in 98/99's.
But of course, no knowing for sure unless strip it down ...
He mentioned a 13B transplant ............ we eventually returned to some lesser form of reality .........

Re: Mechanic woes
I'd be inclined to get it done sooner rather than later, it may last a long time in that condition, but it could also do a bit of damage to the crank the longer it goes.
