World Time Attack Challenge

Postby ja9 » Fri Oct 18, 2013 8:27 pm

I just back home from WATC and couldn't believe the engineering that goes into these cars. Seriously unbelievable and the aero on these cars is ridiculous. They have become caricatures of themselves. I have to say I don't mind them at all. Some teams are running 800hp

I don't like asking 'how long is a piece of string' questions but I need to know just in case I win the Lotto before I get too old to drive.

So my question is how much money do you reckon the top flight cars are worth. How much goes into building and developing these cars. If anyone one has intimate knowledge I'd appreciate a ballpark figure. Should we compare them to say a V8 Supercar.
UNDERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the front of the car. OVERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.

Im pretty sure you will find that the fastest cars are running well over 1000whp.

I think that might be a bit high dann, pretty sure mca is a fair bit less anyway. Anyway some of the team bios have details.

Competitive Pro-class (incl. Pro-Am) cars $300k up to $1.5 million. Most would be under 7 figures though.

I read the Tilton evo has 900hp.
Didn't Nemo last year have 850hp or similar?

Most of the Pro-class cars are under 800whp.

That sounds like a bargain compared to what was said above. $300K I could believe, but $1.5 million, really.

Yep, you very rarely ever get back what you "invest" in cars....moreso race cars!

....because that is all 'that' engine could safely/reliably handle. It was not the engine spec they had wanted in the car last year....late delivery of the 'right' engine parts left them with no choice if they going to make it to WTAC 2012.

The 'right' engine is now in but once again the run was left too late and not enough track testing was undertaken. Two head gaskets have been breached in the past two days....I don't know anymore than that. All I wish is that Luffy gets at least two good sessions from the engine tomorrow to see if he can surpass last years winning time....and may be even bring home the winners trophy. Tilton Interiors have really stepped up this year and have now thrown down the gauntlet by becoming the first competitor to go into the 1:24's. Should be an exciting day of racing tomorrow!

Cheers,
Danny

"Huge" horsepower is easier to manage in a straight line (as long as you can still get all of it transferred to the ground). The biggest battle with circuit cars is balancing the power application through corners. Having massive horsepower makes it much harder to drive smoothly and it can result in the vehicle being slower than if it had less horsepower (because it was easier to drive into, though and out of corners). Nemo proved that last year. It was one of the slowest pro class cars down the front straight (IIRC 30km/h slower than Tilton) yet was 3 seconds quicker then the nearest competitor per lap.

The real issue facing the Pro-class cars with extreme aero packages is the load rating of the tyres. Last year Nemo achieved almost 3'g' laterally through one of the corners through the extra downforce. That's some serious load on the tyres.

Cheers,
Danny

Sure, its just not a lot of power when you consider that dirt track awd cars were running bigger power 10 years ago. IMO.

Its all money though isn't it.
