Well not quite.

While I would just recommend replacing the standard O2 for this car a wideband such as LC-01 and others actually are configurable to output one of the analogue outputs to be a narrowband.
This way you would be able to send a narrowband signal to your stock ecu and view what is really going on via your wideband gauge.

Have you tried just disconnecting the o2 sensor and seeing how the car behaves?

I have no idea if the fuel filter has been changed... Looks like a quick job though might throw one in next week.

Takes maybe 30 mins?

10 mins for the filter, the other 20 to wash the petrol out of your eyes. (really, wear goggles. It farking burns)

Do a massive skid.

That will fix it.

I once got in the shower with a cup of fuel to clean the grease from my face and just poured it all over my face.

Never again.

Wow I was dumb(er) when I was a teenager.

My na8 used to (intermitently) do a similar thing, I changed the o2 sensor and coolant temp sensor and problem solved. Unfortunately I changed them at the same time so I don't know which one fixed it. Fuel consumption did not change during the fault, maybe cause it was intermittent, or maybe cause I spent most the time above 4500 rpm. Both these sensors are prone to failure on a na8, as are the ht leads (which can also show as a low speed miss). If you plan to keep the car i suggest giving it a full service & change the sensors and leads (use quality leads). Good luck.

Ugh ... will be doing my NB's filter next week. My NA was simple, couple vise grips on the pipes & didn't spill a drop ...

Plug leads are much more commonly a problem than plugs with our cars. They might look good and test OK with a multimeter but still not be able to perform when they've got 20,000V running through them. Ignition specialists usually have proper high voltage lead testing equipment. You can get them to test and then make up a set if they fail or else just buy a new set.

It's an easy job, it just means fuel spills everywhere. (granted, I didn't clamp mine since I couldn't find any clamps)

Just be aware the NB uses an odd quick clip system and not the usual hose and clamp system like an NA.
I'm note sure if Mazda still sell the clips, but they don't come with the new filter.
Bascially, be very careful not to break the clips

edit:
Clips are the blue things here (they were white on my car)

and how to remove them:

Yeah ... actually started this job last week when I did all the oils ... took off the filter's cover & found those clips! Also solid pipes so can't clamp them off like the NA's. Have to ensure de pressurised or else :? Tried one of the clips very carefully & felt bit brittle so went read up a "how to" & after that decided to play safe. Rang local Mazda dealer - turns out they don't hold stock, can't even order from Melbourne, an ex Japan item & will take 2 weeks  . So I Ordered from good 'ol MX5Parts UK on Monday - bet they arrive in a week & only a few cents dearer!

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm waiting on my O2 to come in from Automotive Plus and if there is no difference will go for leads, temp sensor then fuel filter.
Damn cars are so expensive... I just want her running smooth but this apprentice wage doesn't keep up with my needs haha.

Alright so here the update guys. I got myself a set of Top Gun Max300 leads and slapped them in. Car felt a little bit better but still not 100%
So I only remembered there was ancient technology in these cars and they require a timing light and adjustment. Surprise surprise it was set to fire at exactly TDC. Set it to the factory 10 and damn she runs so much smoother now. But as I was about to hop out of the car when I got home was that it doesn't drop back to idle straight away. It sits at about 1400 the. Drops back to 900 after about 3-4 seconds. Might try fiddle with the TPS as I think I didn't fit it right when I cleaned the throttle body.
