Brake Fluid Capacity

Postby ianoz » Mon Oct 14, 2013 12:11 pm

Hi,

Sorry for the nooby question - I thought I'd seen this on the fourms somewhere, but searching skills have failed me :frown:

How much brake fluid is needed for a complete flush and change of NA8 brakes? Planning to use Motul 600 and not sure how many bottles to buy.

Thanks
Ian

I just completely flushed my NA8 brake and clutch systems, used two 500mL bottles. Brake system took most of it. Used this bleeder:

and it worked surprisingly well. I did have to secure the black tube onto the main hose with a nut to prevent the pressure blowing it off.

Close up the caliper pistons, siphon out almost all the old fluid from the reservoir before you start to pump, be careful not to flush through any more than you need and then you can just get away with a single 500ml bottle.

Thanks :)

I have a similar bleeder tube - definately makes it easier. Have been trying to source speedbleed nipples, but they don't seem to want to answer emails.

Hi manga_blue - do you mean swing the caliper up and g-clamp the piston fully in while bleeding that corner? (I know to be careful with the rear adjusters).

Cheers

I do. I tend to do a thorough check of the brake pads, lines, rotors and calipers before I do a fluid refresh, so it's not really any extra effort to squeeze down all the caliper pistons as I go.

edit: hang on. I squeeze up the whole lot before I bleed. Squeezing them one at a time while bleeding would force old fluid back into the system.

Ah - good point. I was only thinking of one corner at a time.

Well I took Pete's advice and went to Supercrap for one of those brake bleeders.

Well I still hate bleeding brakes, this POS broke almost immediately.

Glad I bleed them, the fluid didnt seem to bad until it got stirred up a bit and there were black chunks, no wonder if felt so bad at the track.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Why not just use a length of clear hose and an old bottle?

Coke bottle = free
Clear hose = $8 for a metre, which will do you about 3 bleeds, assuming you throw out the cut piece of hose after each use.

i paid 25 cents for 25cm of clear 6mm id tube. 600ml coke bottle was $3.00. but i drank the contents. drilled 2 5mm holes into the lid. one had the clear tube pushed through it, the other is a breather.
