what cheap tyres look like

Most readers of this forum know this already, but it hadn't occurred to me to do other than wait for the cheap nasty tyres that were on the car when I bought it to wear down before I replaced them. Bless them, MX-5 Factory had a look at the inside walls when the car was up on the hoist - terrifying cracks, almost all the way through. I'd been keeping the pressures properly monitored, so it wasn't user abuse - and I've never taken the baby on a track, although we do a fair bit of brisk country driving. Would not have been fun if the tyres came apart on a freeway or some fast curves! Thank you Dick Richey for saving me from great danger - and if anyone else is going round on el cheapo tyres, please have a look at the inside walls.

Just over two years since they were fitted - I have no reason to suspect they were elderly, but again I didn't check that. If I get a chance to call Dick at MX-5 Factory tomorrow I'll ask him to have a squizz

One wonders how old they were when they were mounted...

Yikes.

The good news is that there are enough decent tyres out there on the market now for a good price. Ku31s for example - great value. Why would you buy cheap nasty rubber?

That's what shocked me. I would never, ever buy cheap nasty tyres. But the guy who sold me the car obviously did, strangely because he really looked after it very well indeed otherwise. I'm sure he believed he was doing the right thing in putting on brand new tyres for me. I knew they weren't all that good quality, but it's my first MX-5 and I don't drive many others so have little to compare with from a roadholding point of view. In any case that isn't the problem; if they were simply not very good I could cope with that and wear them out before replacing. I'm very boring with tyres, check the pressures regularly at home when they're cold, don't even trust the ones at the servo. It simply didn't occur to me that a modern tyre with plenty of tread, well looked after, could fall apart like that, on the inside where I never look and I bet most other people don't either. Thank goodness for a thorough workshop - I may be exaggerating to say that MX-5 Factory saved my life but who knows? Dick is going to see if he can decode the markings to see how old the tyres are and if he finds out I'll update. Meantime, obviously no serious enthusiast is going to put up with cheap rubber as I did, but please, people, have a good look your tyres, inside and out (is inside the right word? You know what I mean anyway!)

Maxxis aren't exactly an unknown tyre company.

Maxxis are used fairly regularly on 4wd tires with reasonable results.

I had 2 Pirelli go to god on the BM under 12 months old not good for a $800 tyre but sh*t happens.
