1990 NA6 Bump Stops

Hello all,

I'm just about to purchase my first MX-5 NA6 1990 and one of the RWC items is the Bump-stops. I'm wondering since I've never worked on these before is it a very labour intensive job? can it be done at home with just jack stands? The mechanic wants to charge me $450 + parts - in saying that he also wants to charge me $30 per brake and clutch pedal pad.

I'm also looking at getting a set of Coil overs so if its recommended to replace with after market ones which would be best to use OR does it depend on the coil overs? I intend to use BC coil overs

bump stops are inside the suspension unit.
so you have to take out the strut, and take it apart to replace the bumpstops.
Coilovers are a complete new unit, so they have new bumpstops already.

BC's are good cheap coils, if you wanted to replace the suspension i would do it now instead of paying money for new bumpstops + labor.

Hi.
You have answered your own question. BC coilovers $1k new no cost if you fit them yourself. If you can't fit them ask on here for help with some incentive (alcohol?) against $450 to fit plus the cost of buying. By doing it this way you get to meet like minded people and learn and have fun. Its what its all about.

The answer was exactly what i was expecting. Now to find some wheels before the coil-overs.

When replacing the stock struts with BC Coil overs should i replace anything else while there like the strut tops? i read that Fat Cat Motorsport mounts should be used or Flyin' Miata ones.

is this correct? And if so what is the benefit of doing this?

Where are you located?

I would replace the BC bump stops with FCM's if you are going to track your car. For day to day the BC have reasonable bump stops. The NA6 rear suspension has very short travel and the BC have a generic length/rate bumpstop hence custom bump stops can improve them when they are pushed to their limits.

as i said the bc coilovers are a complete unit, nothing needs changing.
they have new top hats already installed.

I second that. Attend a "Dodgy Day" for best results. What state are you in? (I don't mean inebriated either!) :lol:
