Mr Morlock wrote:if its not legal to carry a child in an MX5 then its a pretty simple solution- don't. The cars have their limitations and perhaps carrying an infant is one of them. Some cars simply do not meet lifestyle and or practical requirements. Children also grow up and 3 o 4 into an MX5 does not go. There are other more suitable cars.

When have I said it's not legal? :S It will be perfectly legal when I get a perfectly legal anchor point installed by a qualified and legal anchor point installation technician.

From the QLD Transport Site for those who are interested:
Can my child sit in the front seat if they are under 7?

This will depend on whether there is more than 1 row of seats in the car and the age of the child.

If the car has 1 row of seats only (for example, a single cab ute):

a child of any age can sit in the front seat if the vehicle has only one row of seats and they are properly restrained. If the vehicle has a passenger airbag fitted, a rearward facing child restraint should not be used if the restraint is positioned close to the airbag.
Where there are 2 or more rows of seats:

a child under 4 years of age cannot sit in the front row of a vehicle that has more than 1 row of seats, even if the child is 3 years of age and large enough to be seated in a booster seat
a child aged between 4 and 7 years of age cannot sit in the front row of a vehicle that has more than 1 row of seats unless all the other seats are occupied by children under 7 years of age.
Please note: If the back seat has 2 child restraints fitted and there is no room for a third child restraint, a non-tethered booster seat or booster cushion can be used, providing the child using the booster seat is between 4 and 7 years of age.

I have a child seat in the passenger side of my NA. It uses the harness points on the half cage as the anchor point.

Different states = different legislation, but do you use a generic 'anchor point'? If so, did you do it yourself or get someone to install it?

I just clipped the strap straight on to the outer passenger side loop on the harness bar.

Our legislation reads much the same as yours, single row of seats blah blah blah. I have fitted myself but I have to take it to one of the fitters to have it signed off.

I know its safe but the piece of paper means that if the worst were to happen the third party injury insurance doesn't have an out.

I hate taking my 6 year old grand daughter in the NC using a booster seat. I mean I love taking her out for a "ride in Max" (as she puts it) and she screeches with delight, but I worry so much about the consequences of being hit, maybe even not so hard from the left side, by some numpty.

I much rather have her sitting in the same booster in the middle of the back seat of the BMW where she is protected by heavy duty metal and a gazzillion airbags. :)

Go practical. It's only a few years.

Once they are old enough to sit in factory seats/belts properly ... get another MX5 ...

No car is 100% safe, but there are degrees.

And believe me ... it's unbelievable how many times you need more than one practical car once kids come along :D

Speaking to automotive plus, rx8s that have been babied have more problems then ones dríven reasonably hard. Very susceptible to carboning up if not show redline regularly.

I've. Been musing over this problem myself.

I have been considering selling the NC2 and buying a 200sx and a motorbike.

I would prefer to get a 4 seat convertible but it must be also:
-RWD
-Japanese
-be enjoyable to drive
And as far as I have been able to discover, such a thing does not exist

change car or buy 3rd car. kid is too small to risk life in the front of a mx5.

buy a $8000 falcodore and a $3000 car trailer. de register the mx5 and use it for track days. car trailer will also save moving costs in the future. and people will always wanna loan it. make $100 a pop.

There was a convertible version of the S13 available and have seen a few turn up in Brisbane at the import dealers down around loganholme just off the motorway.

Another option could be a Z32 2+2 targa top, now very cheap if you get it in na form.

They are all imports to my knowledge, no AUssie delivered ones (in case that's a concern for you)

I am at that point in my life where I would prefer the insurance to be easy. Also are these convertibles not turbo? Which to my mind makes it not a 200sx

Maybe if it was an NA or NB but I cannot justify using a NC2 for such a thing. Plus I have a baby now and I'm a lawyer this I barely have time to scratch my arse.

Greg.
When you turn your car on, does it return the favour?
