SE exhaust on NB8A
I did search, and it appears that the muffler fits nicely, but the rest requires modification due to "the angles and stuff"
Anyone know what this actually entails? And.. how big is the SE exhaust system? Work well for a better flowing N/A exhaust system? And is the cat any better flowing?
I guess, in terms of a yes/no answer, what I'm asking is..
Can I take an SE muffler, cat and piping and pay an exhaust place to 'make it fit' whether that means new pipes, or only mild modification, and is it worthwhile.
I'm almost considering a set of ebay cheapy headers and an SE exhaust system, dropping it at the exhaust place with the instructions 'make it work'

Re: SE exhaust on NB8A
Muffler fits, tip sits lower as SE have that little rear diffuser.
Sounds nice, but no power increase (or yes power increase if you believe more noise = free flowing)
Rest of the stuff fits, as its the same car, but not towards the dump end, so yes would require modifying.
Ultimately it is a factory exhaust, which was produced with many may compromises to fit in with legalities and not performance. Cat seems to differ all around the world, but its gotta be the same as it has to pass the same tests, the and would be gunked up by now.
If you can pick up the full exhaust for like $50, and have a welding contact, it could be financially viable, imho if you get a new hi-flow cat welded in, and remove any factory resonators in the mid pipe.
Get some NA8 Hurricane extractors, they fit your engine flange, but the other end wont directly bolt up to the rest of the stock exhaust. But if your getting it all modified anyway, it doesnt matter. They will bring you the increase in response you seem to be after.

Re: SE exhaust on NB8A
I have the SE axle-back muffler as some would have already know, and yea..a direct bolt on.
But from what I've read from miata.net (see links below), the rest fits only with some mods being done to it. So the rest of the parts are just collecting dust in the shed. I'm starting to like the sound of it.. a little more bassy than stock, but not intrusive. But as emily mentioned, no performance gains or negligible at best..but for $50 - $100 it's cheap thrills.
Some links (you may or may not have read it)

Got this from the OP in the first link,

Got this from the OP in the first link,
in all the photos, the 99 pipes are seen above the MSM.
in the downpipe bung photo #5, you can barely see the edge of the bung in the 99 downpipe. very close to the manifold flange.
in the MSM downpipe, I had two bungs welded in
at the same location as seen in the upper photo.
they are offset, (not lined up behind each other)
one almost in same position, the other pointed downward.

Re: SE exhaust on NB8A
NA8 hurricane extractors fit huh?
Well, I was looking at empire performance extractors, as they bolt on to the NB8A system, and then the mazdaspeed muffler, and ask an exhaust shop to basically make just the pipes in between with a good cat.
But the guy only wants to sell the full system, not just the muffler, and he want over 100 bucks so might have to passsss

Re: SE exhaust on NB8A
I read up on these headers around here.. Some peope said they were good value, but others said that the "collector" could be all wrong.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Empire-Perfo ... 27d90b47dc
Is that something you can tell by looking at it, or is it something that can only be figured out when it's still not all welded up?

If a low mileage SE axle back came up locally for $50 or less, I'd probably do the same and try it out on my NB8A. But add on freight or cost to have someone modify the rest of the system to fit, I can't imagine it would be worth going that far. Rather put that cost towards a better system, even if only a better sounding system

Re: SE exhaust on NB8A
Just bought the full system after a tasty price drop
Very clean metal, supposedly taken of an SE at 16,000km by a 60 year old dude who spend nearly $3000 on a stainless wider bore system from the states, stored in plastic inside a shed until today. Lovely old bloke, dropping it off at my place in his ute tomorrow. I'm going to find a way to get my cars butt off the ground so I can stick the muffler on. The rest will be a job for me to do in a few weeks.
Now I just need to figure out whether the SE cat and tubing is better than the NB8A cat, and how much work is involved in fitting it.
May end up with an SE muffler and cat, and custom everything else to make it work if the cat is good but the pipes suck. If the pipes and cat are good, I'll just plop it all on. If the pipes are good and the cat is rubbish, I'll just buy a new cat. meow

Cool, hope you like it. Let me know how you go with the cat, hopefully successful so I can follow suit in the future.

Contrary to my previous comments ... this particular system does sound worth it ... meow indeed

Re: SE exhaust on NB8A
I stuck the muffler on. Those rubber hangers are such a pain when the car is flat on the ground.. wow.
Sounds great, seems to be almost quieter below 4000rpm, but picks up around 4500 and starts to glurble and blurt a little.
Stunning sound at WOT right through the rev range however. Very pleased overall. I'll let you all know how the rest of the system goes.
Some dude who contacted methrough the ebay seller is desperately trying to buy the cat section for $40 and says that's far more than an SE cat is worth so I should just take it and run.. hmm...
Also, the tip is pretty:)
Mazdaspeed springs, check
Mazdaspeed exhaust, check.
Wonder what's next???

Re: SE exhaust on NB8A
Exhaust place is going to make a cut, lose some pipe between cat and resonator, and make it fit, on Thursday.
Stock exhaust will be in one piece so I can go back if it turns to crap.
$150 sound about right for them taking the old exhaust off, then cutting and welding the new one to fit, and fitting it up?

Re: SE exhaust on NB8A
Did it, happy with it, sounds awesome. With only the SE muffler it cracks and pops and has a grizzly sound. The SE from the headers back sounds less grizzly, but sort of has a two-tone sound, like there's 2 small cars racing next to each other.
No noticeable power either positive or negative.
