No, what we're saying is that a stock MX5 cooling system in reasonable condition can handle that sort of thing easily, every time. That's what these cars were built for. There's something wrong with yours. As Dann said, you could have bought a crap new thermostat, or your 52mm radiator doesn't flow properly, or your water pump is stuffed, or the whole system is blocked up with gunk, or maybe one of the hoses has gone soft or delaminated inside so it collapses and blocks under suction, or whatever ...


I'll start by doing all of these and seeing if this will fix it :)

Thanks for your help guys and hopefully one of these are the issue and it is soon fixed!

Just a quick question...
What RPM range do you try and maintain, and where do you shift typically?

mine hits redline around 7k i rarely shift at 7k, usually around 6k-6.5k

I've been up and down both Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious in both my NA and NB, no problems, both accelerate hard on the upclimb and never any heating issues

A few week ago I took a friend [he drove] in my NA up to Maleny and we went via Bellthorpe Range, much steeper than Glorious and he had it sitting around 7000rpm in 2nd and did the 5-6km of steep stuff very hard - no problems except for when it levelled out and the cows had been across the road while 'doing their business' he went thru that at around 6500-7000 in 3rd !!

Hope you get to solve the problem

Ok, because a mate drove my car not long ago, and he refused to shift after 4000rpm and it felt weird and sounded like it was struggling.

I have a mate with a wrx and he goes full throttle and changes gears every 2 seconds rather than feather it through the rpm.

It is so wrong. He tries to ride a small torque band... which doesnt exist.

Agree that there is nothing wrong with a properly functioning standard cooling system, so there is something that needs to be sorted with yours.

The only time I've had overheating troubles was on a track day. I removed the bling grill and that solved the problem!

Also ensure that the radiator has the foam insulation around it to prevent air escaping around the radiator and not getting through it. Also check that an under tray is fitted, for the same reason. Your 52mm rad is overkill and could easily be the cause of the problem - too thick for the air to pass through, so the above issues become even more important than they otherwise might be... The air will take the path of least resistance.

You didn't mention this problem on the Nebo run the other night. I agree with all other comments, standard cooling should handle it fine. Is your fan coming on as it should? Also what condition is your coolant, & are you running coolant or just water?

I had the same issue with the standard radiator which is why i upgraded but it has not changed much at all i.e. It takes longer to warm up so i know its doung better but it seems to 'get hot' (3/4 hot on the gauge) in the same time but seems to just stay there while the standard radiator would actually get hot and over heat after a period of tine

It doesnt happen going up my nebo, its only the steeper sections which are coming back up mt. Glorious and going up mt nebo from samford when the engine is mainly revving high in second with not enough power to just hit 3rd

If that doesnt make sense tell me and ill try elaborate
