using helmets in mx5

what got me thinking about this on drive day down the great ocean road with the mx5 club ,how during the week I drive cars with esp,abs and up to 8 air bags ,power steering ,and mx5 has no power steering ,no air bags ,basic disc brake system and braving the elements eg other drivers,kangaroos other drivers ,my son and I did 390km with no radio on he turned it off (13 years old)we talked about a lot of things ,it got me thinking about the days we used sit in back off utes just behind the cab with tonneau up to our necks!butt got me thinking with kit cars and mx5 if they brought in helmets for these types of cars what change would be like?

My dad owns a Lotus 7 replica and on any drive much over 30 mins full face helmets are worn. The wind, noise and buffeting from the lack of windows, doors, roof or windscreen soon prove tiring otherwise.
We have never encountered problems with the police with regards to wearing helmets on public roads in the 8 years we have had it on the road.

Yeah they are a pain in the $&$.... and sure there might be some indulging in revenue raising. But a lot of what they do is ...believe it or not.... aimed at helping people and saving lives. Evidence shows their draconian approach at black spots reduces accidents.

Who are you going to call when you get broken into btw?

There is not the slightest doubt in my mind that it would be safer (particularly in a softtop) to wear a helmet when driving anywhere.
Do I want to do it? Not especially.

To the doubters, sit in your car with the soft top up. Turn your head to the right, and take a good long look at the soft top frame right beside your head. Now think about your head meeting that frame at speed ... :shock:

I just sat in the "other car" and noticed my head was right next to a very hard B pillar. It will hurt if I hit that with my noggin too.

Jack looks so cool in his helmet.
We could start a whole new trend here.
Everybody would want to outdo the next guy.
You could have a range of military-style helmets (I bags the 'coalscuttle' style)
You could have them in a great range of colours - like Sebastian Vettel.
There could be ones that are wired with LEDs that flash messages ("Wanna race?") ("Sorry Officer".)
The possibilities are endless.

It is certainly not illegal to wear a helmet in a road car. Using one in a Clubman style car is not that uncommon simply to make the experience more amenable. Helmets were made mandatory on motorbikes for obvious reasons though in some countries people still opt not to. Same goes for bike riders in Vic as well ie mandatory. Incidentally I would not ride a horse without a helmet and all Pony Clubs in Vic at least mandate that riders wear an approved equestrian hat.- they used to get riders ( when eventing) also to remove ear rings or tape them up! On a horse a helmet adds comfort, keeps the noodle dry ,helps with magpie swoops and adds a safety factor when you take the inevitable tumble. Same goes for motorbikes- far more comfortable than getting buffeted by wind , rain and insects etc. If a person is nervous or feels more comfortable driving with a stack hat then go for it.
