HSCCQ will be hosting a Come'n'try Motorkhana event this weekend, out the back of the Drag strip at Willowbank.
Run under CAMS, the event is an opportunity to sample Motorkhana, without the need to commit yourself to a full CAMS license. Note: this is NOT an MX5CQ championship event.
Motorkhana is fun, low cost, safe and surprisingly challenging. MX5s seem just made for it, with low weight, great handling, excellent visibility and ability to handbrake turn. And let's face it: how often do you get to do two dozen handbrake turns in an afternoon? This is a very different experience to a track day. Look here to see a simple test from both inside and outside: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6wh0rDuTRs.
This can be some of the silliest, funnest stuff you'll ever legally do in a car. And some of the most difficult.
The Motorkhana challenge is to complete a number of different tests in the fastest possible time, without incurring any penalties. Courses are done in first and/or reverse gears, though you might need second for longer patterns. Tests range in duration from 20-40 seconds, and the patterns can be open and fast, tight and slow, or a combination. Depending on your technique and skill, you typically use very short bursts of hard acceleration, hard braking, hard cornering, slalom, handbrake turns and power slides. More difficult courses can also require reverse flicks but not at come'n'try level.
Come'n'try days are normally organised with first timers initially is a seperate group, doing some basic training on a simple pattern. When you are ready, you can go off the other two areas and try some more complex tests. You set your own pace, drive within your own limits, and only push your car as hard as you want to. It's just for fun. Right!
If you want to have a crack at this, you can enter on the day, or in advance using the information here: http://www.hsccq.com/upcoming-events/come-and-try-motorkhana/. If you are entering on the day please advise Keith Butcher that you are coming email: butchy_hsccq@tpg.com.au
Other stuff you need to know:
1. Present your car for scrutineering in safe running condition. If you already use it for motorsport, it should be fine.
2. No fire Extinguisher is required
3. Helmets must be worn in convertibles, even if a hardtop is fitted.
4. Apparel is minimum short sleeves, shorts and covered shoes. Non-synthetics preferred eg cotton. No thongs, no singlets!
5. CTP Extension or Rally Insurance is required for QLD registered vehicles. Organise this with you CTP insurer and bring the letter with you.
6. A CAMS license L2NS or higher is required. If required, a temporary license & club membership can be arranged on the day.
7. You will have the opportunity to ride with some experienced drivers, or you can carry an instructor. Just ask!
8. Bring water, food and sunscreen. It's a long day and the only catering is a drinks esky with honour jar. Nearest servo is 10 minutes away.
9. Arrive by 9am. We try to finish up by 3:30pm, but you can leave earlier if you wish.
Hope to see some new fives out there, to add to the usual suspects. Any questions, ask here or email Keith Butcher directly.

Here's another vid I like, complete with optional donut.

I like this too, sort of like extended motorkhana. I don't think I could remember a pattern this complex. And how about those reverse flicks?

This is not a bad playlist

Guys, feel free to add your own motorkhana vids or playlist, if you have a favourite.
