Scribbler - LS1 Powered NA Build

Postby tinsfci » Sun Sep 29, 2013 7:39 pm

It all started with a pen lid...

And will end with the slowest build ever of a 400BHP LS1 powered race MX5. Along the way we will also learn how to dismantle a Landcruiser, drink beer, break things and watch violent movies.

The donor car is dead:

If there is one thing thing that you can trust a V8 Falcadore driver to do, it's hit things while travelling sideways at a good speed. At the salvage auctions, your average econobox has been involved in a fairly standard nose to tail smash, while many of the V8's have a side caved in but minimal front damage. Perfect for a conversion!

This car was a 2000 VX SS, and judging buy the damage it hit at least one decent sized tree with the right side C pillar and ended up beached in a sizeable mud patch. Before pulling the engine we got it running to check the motor and box were OK. All Good.

Cutting the car in half with an ozito recirculating saw may not have been necessary, but it sure was satisfying.

Sub'd, looking forward to seeing this car in action.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Random detail post.

Without a centre console in the car, the location of the fuel lid release lever always really annoyed me and occasionally caught my sleeve. Saw on either m.net or mt.net where someone had relocated the lever to where one of the number plate lights was and thought it was a great idea for this car.

Forgot to take photos of the mod in progress, but the job is fairly simple:
-Removed the fuel / boot release levers and cut off the boot lever. It will be replaced by a pull cable where the key barrel was.
-Removed the LH plate light and made a bracket out of ali angle to mount the assembly with the lever just sticking out.
-Pull cable is the original length just looped around the boot a bit. You can see the cable loop in the second photo, along with the 7 core trailer cable that now powers all the rear lights. No heavy factory harness for this beast.

Inside view. This will need a plastic cover to stop rain getting in the boot (race car... do I really care if water gets in the boot?)

Works a treat, and much easier to get at with the car on the trailer.
