Vibration Problem - Help!

Postby Grumps » Tue Sep 24, 2013 6:34 pm

2001NB roadster 61000km. Looking for answer to vibration at all speeds though more noticeable 40-60kmph. No noises.
Felt throughout car, steering, seats, floor. Had all wheels balanced. New Bridgestone Adrenalin tyres 2years ago (7000kms).
Local Repco garage has checked everything he can think of – steering, bearings etc. Found bad joints in tailshaft (replaced) and both rear CV shafts (replaced). Improved slightly but still present. Grateful for any help with this.

Bent wheel?

Bent hub?

Horribly incorrectly positioned power plant frame?

I recently had a similar issue in my NB8A. Would have sworn I had a wheel trying to shake itself off the car. While searching I found a bent front sway bar mount. Replaced it, improved the vibration a bit. After more searching and not finding much, I read an old thread on here on tyre pressures. Mine were on 35psi, so I reduced the tyre pressures (my NB8A has the 16" 8B wheels) and at 30psi found the vibration almost completely stopped. Also during the process I picked up an NB8B strut brace, which seems to have had a very small benefit (of course yours already has that). Still some vibration, but considering the vehicle's age and that all the bushes are probably still original, it's now very acceptable...

Bent wheel, flat spotted tyre, damaged tyre with bulge in sidewall or out of round?

I had/have a very similar issue, also a 2001 nb8b. At around the same speeds mine would get a pretty bad shimmy or vibration mostly in the rear end and you could feel it throughout the whole car, seats, steering etc. The more the tyre pressures went up the worse it got, mind you this was only really noticeable on very cold mornings or when the car was cold then seemed to mostly disappear.

Last week I got some coilovers fitted (new suspension) and it seems to have pretty much gone completely, tyres up to 36 psi (cold) front and rear, I was running the rears 2 psi lower to help with the vibration. Feels quit good now but on the odd occasion Ill still notice a very slight vibration which could be the wheels or bushes (got told these were still in good shape though) but I might have a look at the sway bar links too.

If it was a bent wheel wouldn't you feel it at all speeds, especially at highway speeds?

Hope you find a solution to your problem soon.

Bent wheel or bulging/flat spot/out of round tyre is my guess.

It is more noticable when first driving so I have thought tyres - but this queensland - not really cold. Garage checked "runout" and said it was okay. Engine mounts okay too. Felt at motorway speeds as well. Rougher road surfaces very unpleasant to drive. Ran tyre pressures between 26 and 34 slightly worse at 34.

I live in north brisbane. A second opinion would sure help, if only to confirm my concerns.

If you ever plan on coming over to the south west side (Jindalee area). I'm available most days and more than happy to hop in with you and/or take a look while you do a drive by or two. I have jacks etc. if need be. PM or email me and we can sort out a time/place.
