what are you guys talking about?!

no need to remove scuttle tray for anything!

wiper arms come off, just 1x 12mm nut holding them to the spline, which is covered by a small rubber grommet.

the connecting rods underneath can get rusty too, those ball joints just pop apart easy.

the wiper rubber blades can be replaced, but for the 18" unit is like $15 at any auto store, its worth it to buy new ones.

As for restoring any of the metal, wet and dry sandpaper in 600 then 800 then 1000 is good.
Metal primer is a must, a rust converter type is a good idea.
White Knight Satin Black is an exact match for oem stuff, I use it all the time and you cant tell.
Trick is 6+ very light coats, dont try to cover the whole piece at once, it gets orange peely very quickly.

Agree Em, but Hambag revived the thread after 9 months specifically asking how to remove the scuttle tray (as did PhilM), so may be they need to get under there to clean it out, as well as to perhaps separately restore the wiper arms.

Yes, I was after info on removing the plastic trim directly under the wiper arms. I have removed the wipers and restored them, but the plastic trim is going to look odd now..

I havent tried it again yet - I want to paint the plenum as Mazda did a rough job the red color is just overspray on the grey base coat.
Next week I will have another go after I source some new covers as one has cracked already.
