Daily turbo setup whims.

Postby mloo » Sat Sep 07, 2013 11:40 pm

I'm looking to get a turbo set up for my miata.

The AVO kit listed on the mx5mania is quite pricey however is it REALLY the only kit that can be engineerd with little to no troubles?

I am fully aware that the video posted by MightyCarMods is extremely unrealistic for a guy like me (little to no mechanical knowledge) as well as limited funds being a university student.

I have read this post: viewtopic.php?f=81&t=33873
And am now quite cautious about running a turbo because of how big the fine is or how hard it can be to get it past an EPA test ($3000).

Considering that those posts were in 2008 has anything changed?

I have also read NitroDann's post about building a turbo under 2 grand however I am not sure if/how re-registerable it is in Vicotria considering it is becoming such a nanny state.

I'd ideally like to keep costs down as well as avoid anything TOO illegal.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Im sorry, but in Vic you pretty much cannot do it unless you go AVO.

Whats the actual fine for driving a turbo car in vic?

Not sure on the fine, but the big problem is the cancelled rego.

Basically it's noted down as not passing EPA and other sh*t, and you can't register the car until it's passed (so expensive EPA tests etc)

But, EPA Vic don't allow programmable ECUs, or even non-programmable ones that haven't been proven to pass the relevant ADR etc.

So, even if it passes all the emissions they'll just knock it back on the ECU anyway.

And you're stuck with an unregistered car that can't be registered, and is pretty much worth the same as a written off shell.

Ok, get a canberra license then.

Or dont get caught.

Which honestly is really easy. there is always a chance but you can get away with it.

AVO you are looking at around $5700 fully installed then you will be looking at around $400 at an engineer to be fully legal on the road. This is the only way you can have a road legal NA6 in Victoria other than an engine swap. Other than that leave it as it is or do it illegally and run the risk. If you get caught it will mean fines and removal of the turbo setup. Same as supercharger and quad throttles as they involve aftermarket management.

triple the price of a turbo setup.

Just get a NSW or ACT licence.

.. If you are gonna spend that much on the AVO kit, probably best to save up and get an SP/SE once you get your Ps off in 2 years time. For the time being maybe get a little grunt from an intake & exhaust upgrade and enjoy your ride :)

I think in that case an SE is the go.

But it needs to be illegal to enjoyable thats the problem. But you wont get caught.

PNP, low mount, heat sheild, black front mount ic and piping, recirc, enclosed filter, sensible haircut and ride height, factory alloys, nothing hanging from rear view, don't display Ps, drive after dark, on Fridays or weekends, or listen to stereo (not that you should still have one). Happy days.

Woah!

I didn't expect all the help!

Thanks for all your responses guys, yeah it seems like a truckload of trouble if I'm not made of money which I'm not so I'll look into other avenues either SE/SP or maybe something else :(

It seems such a shame that the NA didn't come with more oomph.

She really is such a good chassis, very fun at low speeds corners

I read somewhere that the miata is quite "ok" between 5000 and redline. For some reason when I have a passenger it feels UBER slow. I have no idea what power figure that I'll be happy with. Maybe even only a 20kw increase over stock.

Looking into getting my mech to just advance my timing?

Why dont you just put on an intake exhaust and some cams along with the little bits of fiddling with the stock sensors to get that to run nice?
