And it is.
Some people just don't have that kind of cash lying around.
By the way, you know the basic costs I put up there? If you want to do a proper job at home, with enough materials, at non-trade prices, you'll be heading towards a few grand in no time for the set up. Ventilation, air and proper lighting are the big killers. If you're going to do it properly, and safely as you suggest Morlock, a grand is still skimping.
I wouldn't bother with the following, but some people like to invest in special covered lighting too, as there is a fire risk with exposed power points. Not something I'd bother with, but it is all something to factor in. Good lighting is essential. I'd rather not have runs all through my paint job, but I am a bit OCD that way.
There's also the need for a PROPER paint mask, not just some dust cover like some people use. There's a reason painters suffer from collapsed lungs. This is actually a bit of kit I WOULDN'T skimp on.
Ok, well, I lie, I'd just borrow the massive regulator mask from work.

Buying a compressor is easy and cheap. If you're doing a whole car, you want a decent flow rate, fill rate and capacity. You also want filters on it so you don't end up with super moist paint. More cash. Hire? That can be more expensive than finding one second hand.
How many coats are you doing? What time are you doing them? Your neighbours are going to love constant compressor noise.
So Morlock, we get it, you think it's terrible. That's fine, that's your opinion.
This is not a topic on safety or legal related issues, or issues that affect anyone else but the owner of the car.
You've stated your opinion. There's no reason to keep ramming it down everyone's throats. As you'll see from the above... I can preach at people as well, and being female I can go on for hours. Chill out. It's cuppa time mate.
