i have an ebay $50 omp/"sparco" copy deepish dish wheel in mine. (I like changing the wheels every 12-18 months or so to freshen up the interior, bag that all you like, but the wheels are cheap, and like, so, whatever..)
My wheel's dish makes it sit about 4cm closer to me, i'd say i'm average height and build and the wheel isnt too close to me.
the main thing to get used to with said dish - which takes the better part of 2 seconds, is for each drive, for the first week of driving, the indicator stalk is bit further back.
- I also have my seat as far back as my clutch foot will allow without my body weight shifting about when i use the clutch.
(Its just something i've always done so i'm less likely to hit the wheel or have an airbag cover explode in my face/chest should an accident happen)
Sooo, the steering wheel 'dishness' isnt in my face or too close to me.
I've found driving with the windows down, as the wheel is closer, i can get more elbow angle while it's resting on the door, ie, it's more comfy (for me).. But be warned, having your elbow out of your vehicle is a warnable offence by many of Oz state's road enforcement.
As far as aesthetics goes, its always in the eye of the beholder, and who cares what anyone else thinks of what you like.
Interiors: just like with love, It's whats on the inside that counts..
Here's a scruffy pic of mine.
