Since it is indeed true that DRLs reduce accidents (and tend to reduce the worst kind of accidents), it should be the case that they get rolled out worldwide. For sure, I was glad today to be on a test drive with a customer in a Czech built i30 rather than a Korean built one as ours had DRLs and we were both convinced they helped a driver at a side road do a double-take and give way to us instead of driving into us.

I quite like the look of these, such an elegant solution for models with fog lamps and they are available in different diameters.

Might also be good for cars with one or more broken foglights.

Looking forward to seeing them fitted by someone.

Will they still allow for brake ducting?

Dave,
I will let you know when mine arrive, the brake ducting is not an issue with NC's but if I do not like the look of them I will just add them to the DRL pile that I already have :). I had considered replacing the H1's in the fog light with some LED's but a suitable circuit proved difficult, as for damaged lamps , I think that the 'ring' will adhere to the fog lamp lens and a such will be smart.

Yes but how does a lay-guy wire them up?
They tell me to expect $500 charge from an auto-electrician for DRL connections...
I'll just go with turning headlights on thanks.

I am considering one of these, as soon as the job is done (if I am happy with the LED's), I will write a primer for you.

Excellent Greg, thank you. Look forward to it. I did wire up a police siren I bought in a market in Mexico once and had fun with that and that was a simple red and black leads to positive and negative battery terminals (no fuse) job. :lol:

Sadly, I can now add that while on a test drive in a dark grey iX35 without DRLs, a bloke in an old Commodore decided to pull out from a side street on my left at point blank range. I swerved violently right to avoid hitting him square-on then back left to avoid oncoming traffic while accelerating to try to get past him before he hit me. He still hit a metre of the passenger side rear, at a 45 degree angle.

His comment to me and to the police was "I saw the car behind you but I didn't see you". It also seems he still couldn't see me while I was directly in front of him and swerving to avoid him!

I know this is only a sample of one incident but maybe the moral is that if you drive a road coloured car, have one with DRLs or drive with headlights on.

Glad your ok Dave - it sounds like it could have been very nasty.

I dont see any argument Against DRLs.

I have to admit i dont like the look of them on my MX, but they are staying there.
Head on a Ti and Black low SE silhouette is easy to miss, but with the LEDs it must help.
I have seen heads do a double take from cars in side roads when they were planning on pulling out.

Actually suffering some whiplash, as is one of my passengers. Not as bad as the Commodorist would have suffered if I hadn't instinctively swerved though. He may very well have got his deathwish.

Interesting point with DRL's and the Toyota 86

The GTS had DRL's above the headlights and lower down actual fog lights, whereas the GT has NO fogs lights [whilst it appears they do!] and those are their DRL's as explained to me. A guy got booked in Victoria for driving his GT with the fog lights on where in actual fact that car has none. After much ado and visits to the Police the fine was eventually withdrawn!

I have always dríven with 'headlights on' regardless, sometimes it's bloody hard to see some 'road coloured' cars approaching and silver cars can be a problem

My apologies Silvi,
I have finally organised myself and purchased a pair of the above, they are bright and very well made but I do not think that they would last in our enviroment as they do not appear to be UV protected. My current thinking is to replace the fog lamp bulbs with some LED inserts and wear any consequences should they arise.

P.S. I did purchase a DRL circut from the same supplier and I must say the quality is ,extraordinary I could not have come close to building the same for anywhere near the price.

Look, to hell with it.....I've decided the best answer is to use the headlights all the time!
It's free and effective.
I did try LED's in the parkers but they weren't bright enough in sunshine and were in a recess so not visible except from straight ahead... fog light replacements would be too low I reckon.
Lots of other drivers around me do the same - have headlights on in the day. It would be nice if they came on each time you start up and you don't have to remember to turn them off after parking ( the parkers stay on otherwise, potentially flattening the battery after a long time) but I can't be bothered making electrical modifications and if I forget , hey it's not the end of the world :roll: !
