I cannot imagine water working at all, just my 2c.

And without being 100% certain you have no air leak you are on a wild goose chase.

True, I'll give it a go. Do you mean to short across the terminals on the switch side, with the engine running?

Ok, I've just re-checked using throttle body cleaner, and I can confirm there are no leaks.

Sweet.

And it has an oem ecu, no piggybacks etc?

The ground and ten should work and I cannot think of much that would change that apart from fiddling with the electrics.

OEM ECU, No Piggy backs. I've not fiddled with the electrics, however the wiring to the AFM is wrapped with elec tape, so who knows what's been done before. I've had this problem intermittently since I replaced the short nose engine with a long nose about a year ago. The old engine ran like a pig due to a flogged & poorly repaired keyway.

Tried a different AFM?

Looked inside the afm wiring?

I dont trust any electrical work anybody has done if it has any electrical tape on it.

Def been a repair of some sort, two wires cut & an extra piece soldered in. As though a piece was cut out & then they were too short. The joins seem secure though, and the colour codes match except for the extra pieces soldered in.

OK, so this car has had multiple things affecting the idle. Inoperative clutch switch - fixed. ISCV proven bad with a multimeter - replaced with good second hand one today. Also replaced all vac lines today. It's better but still not right, so I'm booking it in to MX5 Plus for next week.

Given there's a bit of time between now & when you're looking to book the car in, might be worth having a quick look inside the ECU at the earth post, PCB & capacitors for any discolouration, & checking engine earthing points.

I tried to check the neutral switch as you said but couldn't get two hands to the connectors.

As you say looks ok (from the pics) - if you've not reinstalled the ECU it's worth removing the cover from the otherside to similarly check the underside of the printed circuit board. Also keep an eye out for any loose components. Btw, did you end up replacing the CTS?
