Mounting steering wheels.

Recently, a nice Momo trek steering wheel popped up for pretty much free so I grabbed it.
Anyone know what the deal with boss kits is? I'm concerned that I'm putting a wheel with no airbag into a car that is supposed to have airbags in the (Nardi) steering wheel (is this legal in VIC?
I read in a few places that you need a specific boss hub if your car is capable of having airbags in the steering wheel, is that so?
I'm also considering a release for the steering wheel. Is that possible with a boss hub?

Definitely not legal in Vic. If you ever wonder if anything is legal in Vic you can just assume no. You will need a hub to fit the momo on and then your airbag light will be permanently on. You can get some wiring that will take care of that.

Extensive googling reveals nothing on the laws around airbags. The only thing I found is in Vicroads modification guidelines, stating that if the original steering wheel has a padded or recessed hub the replacement must be of similar design. Airbags are like, part time padding, but I doubt 'airbags' is what is meant by padded hub.

Now curious as to which boss hubs will work

On the airbag note, I was informed by my learner driving assessor when I went for my Ps in dad's WRX that the aftermarket steering wheel was illegal (because no airbag, which didn't come on the car anyway). but no mention of the fact that it was a turbo... add what credence to that you will.

Whatever, I'll just plead ignorance and claim that the internet didn't give me the answer therefore it doesn't exist, and then just pay the fine, show them that I've put the original back on, and then go home and swap it back.

It's this wheel.

Picked it up for $30

Note: The guy has another one like this up for the same price if anyone is chasing a good deal on a yellow, illegal in VIC, aftermarket steering wheel with no horn button.

Im pretty sure almost all aftermarket steering wheels are technically illegal due to the metal spokes not being padded like the factory NA Momo. Just install it and enjoy.

It's not like I can hurt anyone else by removing the drivers side airbag right?
I'll just install a harness and hope for the best.

Just need to work out whether to get a slim boss and a quick release, or a normal boss, or whatever.
And I still can't figure out whether I need an extra clip that locks the horn button to the boss, cause some places sell them so it's confusing.

Btw most harnesses are illegal as well.

is 22 joking? Instead of spending time googling- try talking to someone doing rwc's. If an airbag is standard equipment then it must not be removed or disabled ( ie road registered) - how does anyone with any interest in cars not know this?

if your pink slipper knows anything he should fail you, and most definitely will fail a blueslip if you ever need one.
