Horn on quick release

I can't figure out how to get it to work. I've watched some youtube videos saying that i have to connect and reroute a few things, but surely it should just be straight forward?

There's one female cable coming from the hub, then the base of the quick release has a male and female
and the head of the q.r has male and female, but my horn button has two males.

If this is a little confusing, i can take the q.r off and take a photo of the wires/connectors for reference

Don't both of the wires from the base of the q.r need to be connected too? as there's only one female wire coming from underneath the boss kit

Take a couple more pics and Ill try to help, being a mechanic my car is always dodgy so Im pretty sure I cheated this step.

I had a horn but I did it 'dodgy'.

yep would have to cut off and solder/crimp on a female fitting.

Before you do that, tape everything together, making sure you've got good connections and see if it works.

option 1:
if you short/connect/tempoarary join the black and yellow wires together, does the horn sound?
if yep, get the black male crimp replaced with a female crimp.
goto "try horn button" below

if no:
option 2:
    try the yellow wire touching the boss' metal. does the horn sound?
    if yep, go to "try horn button" below


If no:
option 3:
Try the black wire touching the boss' metal. does it sound now?
    if yep, goto "try horn button below"
    if no: you have a wiring issue between the boss and horn wiring in the steering column.

Try horn button:
if coming from option 1:
get a female crimp for the black wire, replace the male crimp,
Join both to the horn, try it out, it should sound. yes? good - WIN.

if coming from option 2:
plug in yellow wire into centre of horn button
    temporarily assemble the horn into the wheel and attach to boss kit with 2 or 3 bolts (tightly but not permanently) - to get earthing contacts
    press horn button, does it sound? yes? good - WIN, reattach all fixtures for the wheel/boss.
if no, disassemble and now re-attach yellow wire to outer lug on the back of the horn button
    temporarily assemble the horn into the wheel and attach to boss kit with 2 or 3 bolts (tightly but not permanently) - to get earthing contacts
    press horn button, does it sound? yes? good - WIN, reattach all fixtures for the wheel/boss.


if coming from option 3:

The horn button is just a switch. When you press the button. Two contacts touch each other allowing electricity to flow from one wire through the other, polarity doesn't matter. It's just a signal that goes to a relay.

while yes, but many horns also have the metal outer "spring" contact which wedges to the steering wheel. I've had horns with one lug which rely on that outer metal contact.
it's also why i optioned the two wire choice first as that *should* work first go.

On some horn switches, while polarity isnt an issue, one contact will be earthed so attaching the wiring to that lug will result in the horn being on (when the wheel is screwed back together to the boss)
That's not on all horn switches, just on some of the cheaper ones.

Cheers for the super detailed reply Droo, i really appreciate. Will try one of your methods soon and keep you posted when i find some more spare time to fiddle.

I figured out yesterday that the wire that wasn't connected to the hub had to be touching the metal ring (for grounding i'd assume), and the spare wire that wasn't connected at the horn button had worked once i held the two together. Don't know if this means anything to you, but will do some more fiddling soon.
