$50 TRACK CAM

its called "emerson" cam in the states & apparently does the job.

I will pick one up on the weekend and give some feedback as im a little hesitant to pay for a gopro when my car rarely sees track work.

So a mate of mine bought one of these Kmart cameras and tested it out mounting it on the front of his Wrangler. He said the footage it shot is pretty useless - it can't even show a number plate from a car in front at 5 metres away.

Also before he tested it I looked at it and the mounting brackets that come with it are pathetic. It pretty much falls apart in your hand as you're trying to put it on anything.

We've both agreed we'll have to just save up for Go-Pros. To look into anything else as a cheaper option at this stage is a waste of time.

fine detail isnt really needed on track just a good enough camera & diy mount.

No. My mate just went for a quick drive with it mounted on the front of his Wrangler to test it with the intention of using it on future episodes.

We'll still probably try it next time we go out but he was pretty disappointed with it.

I bought one of these recently and made a quick test video:

Also I picked up an 'Audiosonic HD Action Camera' from Kmart for $49. It has a 120 degree lens and records in MJPG - 30fps @ 720p. The stream is using AVI as the container.

I plan to use the camera in potentially sacrificial places (recording suspension movement for example).

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I'd use one for both Buck's Outdoors and when I eventually start doing track days so I'll wait until I can get a Go-Pro.

i dont think anyone should be comparing these to gopros.

a gopro is something on a whole different level, this is merely for when you dont need much details i imagine.

i will give non biased feedback after i pick one up.

It gave enough detail for me to see speedo etc, see my video above. One unknown is how long the battery lasts as you can't charge it while it is in use (it goes into file transfer mode).

I started with two chewing gum packet sized “spy cameras” from Ebay – 2 for $50, had them for a couple of years of track work.

Then last Christmas I was asked by the family what I want. I said “All throw in and get me a GoPro!!!”

Well it was chalk and cheese between the two. Like comparing a Lada to a Lambo. Both do the same thing but……

Now Christmas is coming up again and I’ll ask for another one. Just so I can take shots from a different direction at the same time as the out the front ones.

I have one of these http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=QC8020 and have no complaints to date. (I received it as a present).

It comes with a variety of mounts (suction cup, strap, roll/cycle bar clamp) as well as a remote and waterproof case.

It records in 1080p HD and takes pics up to 12MP.

There is a 720p version for $79 as well.

I don't have a sample video uploaded (it's over 1GB) but here is someone else's footage

Guys have a look at the Mobius Action Cam, they started life as a Rc model plane camera and have had quite a few neat features focused on in car camera functions.

Quality is still not Go-Pro standard but its the closest I've seen!

Should cost around $80

wow, that mobius seems VERY good.

im awaiting an sd card from ebay and will see how this one goes, if it is not up to the task i will give the mobius a shot!
