Sorry for hi jacking,
but quick question on the subject; if my shifter sometimes wont go into 2nd when I downshift from 3rd, no crunching and it usually goes in fine when I rev match.. what could this be?
(NA6 5 speed, new exceedy clutch & lightened fly, entire shifter can pivot slightly when turned on the spot).

Or (more likely, and cheaper) worn shifter bush thingy. (the white nylon cup at the base of the shifter)

Wait for more qualified responses, but if it were me, my #1 check would be the shifter bush cup thing.

Update on my gearbox.
According to the gearbox guy the scyncros in 3rd are munched. I told them that 3rd gear was fine, it was 1-2 that was the problem. I'm now confused. All this was relayed through a third person so things may have got lost in translation.
Oh and the best part $1100 to replace what's needed. Does this amount sound right for a few replacement parts. Sounds expensive to me.

It is a 6 speed. The reason I'm looking at spending the money on my gearbox although I can purchase one for the same money is because of the unknown. At least this way I know what has been done. Still doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

Def worth checking condition & secureness of inner boot & condition of shifter & cup/bush inside turret.

Hi Cheyne,
In the first instance I would suggest that you speak with the gearbox reconditioner, It is difficult to determine wear on the shifter bush but if you have it out it reclacement cost is low, the shift feel on my NB went from brilliant to crap in an instant and inspection showed that the lower boot had collapsed. When you have it in pieces change the oil in the turrent, suck the oil out before removing the shift lever (use a turkey baster from a 100 yen shop). Paul is correct in saying that you should check the hydraulics as well.

The upper dust boot is busted, not sure about the lower boot yet. but pretty sure the locator pin bushing on the fulcrum ball is broken/gone because it feels like the bushing isn't there judging by how much I can turn the shifter. Through the hole in the upper dust boot I can't feel anything wrong with the lower one & it looks like an NA8/NB lower dust boot rather than the NA6 version so that must've been replaced once before.
Gonna be rebuilding mine soon I think.

Replace the ancillaries, boots, and bush and other things, mix 50/50 ATF and 30w engine oil, go for a very QUIET drive, dump the oil and replace it with the recommended stuff before you think about a re-build. The ATF is high detergent and will clean up the sliders and other bits, it might be just the fix. Again take Paul's advice and check the hydraulics.
