Urethane will work. Waterproof and is essentially a glue. I use it around windscreens when installing them.

Tape will work just as well and isn't nearly as expensive.

I cleaned that horrible black stuff off with wax and grease remover, cut new plastic and stuck it on with duct tape. Duct tape is airtight, lasts a long time and is easy to remove.

the "horrible black stuff" does a good job. Its been around for decades and it works. Duct tape- a word that seems to have been popularised by USA is not the right product esp in a production environment. A tape merely has a thin carrier and an adhesive attached and it will deteriorate quite rapidly. Still you can use whatever you like- no one is likely to remove the door trims and give a mark out of 10 . If "you" look up the reason to choose butyl it becomes clear why it is the right product eg
Pressure Sensitive Adhesive No special installation equipment non-hardening mastic, Forms a soft resilient compression seal. Allows movement due to expansion/contraction Will not crack, virtually unlimited storage life,Forms an immediate bond,Supplied in a roll Quick, clean and accurate to install with a constant coating thickness,Visco-elastic If bond broken will re-adhere to itself on contact (self-healing) Resists water vapour transmission. Ideal for permanent waterproof seals etc etc.

I agree with you Mr Morlock. The original sealer is better. I got rid of mine because it has a tendency to spread when disturbed. My aftermarket central locking comes loose and requires readjustment periodically. I find tape to be good enough.
