Helmet and glasses woes!

The lasik eye surgery thing is odd to me, many people who wear glasses arent so sure they want it, however I have great vision and if someone gave the ultimatum, pay us 6k or you will need glasses for the rest of your life, Id give them the 6k in a heartbeat.

Exactly! But in my case it cost $4000 because i got $1000 back from my health fund, AHM (AHM and Defence Health are the only 2 that im aware of that give a benefit for getting your eyes lasered). Was worth every cent to me, i now have perfect vision.

It's not an option for everyone though...my eyesight is so bad, my corneas aren't thick enough for the correction needed (at least 10 years ago when I considered lasik).

I was thinking of getting it done, but have heard that the later in life you get it done the less chance of it lasting forever.
A guy I know of had it done, and after less than 12 months he was back wearing glasses and his vision was not as good as before he had it done.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has had similar experiences, or know the truth.

I wear glasses and just bought a Bell R1 which is way more comfortable then the AGV Titech bike helmet I had-I think your helmet may be too tight as mine is not that tight but doesnt move at all.Bell offer a range of cheek pads-get something thinner and it should solve your problem

The R1 is a bike helmet, my helmet is a car helmet so has a very different construction. The opening is tiny, the lining comes much further down your forehead and the chek pads extend much further forward. The helmet fits extremely well but is always going to be snug as a result of its construction.

I have a bike helmet and just jam the arms in. Works well enough. Although I don't like having the viser down and the glasses on. Usually get away with it.

I'm sort of surprise no one has thought of just putting a seam in the foam along the eye-line to allow arms to reach the ears. Surely that wouldn't impact on the ADR.

Yeah you would think someone had designed a helmet with an allowance for it....or a prescription visor

I have been wearing glasses for 26 years (since I was 5, 31 now) and would love lasik however there is the cost to consider and like any surgery it is not always without its complications. There is also a chance that down the line you can start to lose your vision again and will be back in glasses. You also need a totally stable prescription for 5 years or so before it is a viable option...You can get it done at any time but it wont be a permanent fix without a stable prescription.

So a lot to consider in getting it. I think some people just dont like the idea of surgery on their eyes...just to squeamish to think about it or worried they will end up blind.

For sure mate, I didn't meant to sound insensitive. And of course I feel for those ppl who genuinely want to do it but can't. But I would encourage ppl to get checked out as to whether they can get it done, particularly younger ppl like me.. I was 24 when I had it done and my vision had been stable for at least 5 years.

When I got it done I reasoned that, given I was spending $400 or so each year on contacts, contact lens fluid, glasses etc, Id be happy if I got 10 yrs good eyesight as it would then be cost neutral for me (it was $4000 as per my previous post). So yeah it's not always necessarily forever and of course even if my long term eyesight stays good ill still need to get reading glasses in future like most people.

Btw Bryan it would be worth getting checked out again, the technology has changed a lot in the last ten years

I have heard the technology has changed and I spoke to my optometrist about it. My father had his cataracts removed and in the process, they inserted corrective lenses...he doesn't wear glasses now! So that's the option I'm waiting for as I'm already in my mid 40s and cataracts aren't too far away!

I had Lasik surgery in Phuket four months ago-previously had a reading prescription +2.75 and a much weaker long vision prescription. Hospital and eye surgeon were first class with end result perfect short vision and almost perfect long vision which is still improving as the surgeon said it would. I wear glasses for long vision only when very tired or when racing-very happy with the result.
Added to this the cost in Phuket was $1500 AUD!

I would be interested to know how you go about researching a reputable surgeon and make contact, bookings, payments etc? Did you have to make a trip for an examination and another for the surgery?
