Aero Thread!

All nice and fascinating to look at but the question is how much of this is overkill? The car needs to put out enough power to go fast enough to capitalize on the aero.

As suggested, look at the WTAC cars...and you'll be surprised at how simple it is on some cars. No need for undertrays, just a simple off the shelf rear wing and as Dann pointed out, a big mother front splitter.

i think lightyears car is a good example of what to do simple. rear wing for downforce. front splitter to reduce lift.

if you want to create massive downforce at both ends of the car, expect an unusable street car.

the mca suspension s13 is a pretty simple but crazy design at the same time. you can see why they have done what they have done. murray coote has been building suspension systems forever after his rallying days. and his son josh like the jdm drift/timeattck scene. so thats where the business is headed now. they live up the road from me.

quite funny that they build the suspension for a few of the other guys up the front of the field.

amazing what a small shop can do compared to the big boys.

I've also been told they are working on a red and blue series for mx5...

I think there is a pic of my red car with the low side skirts (helps stop air spilling back under the car) vented bonnet (reduces front lift), front splitter (downforce on front at stagnation point), airdam (reduces air going under car), canards (mostly to block air to tyres), fastback (less drag and helps air stay attatched, also good for flow of air to wing), and triple element wing ( rear downforce). Sitting in the pits at winton. Should be in my c.f build thread. Can't be bothered trying to paste pics with the ipad.

I do believe that the front splitter touching the ground caused this. Admittedly more aero at play for LMP than mx5s but if you have a rear diffuser you need uninterrupted airflow beneath the car to 'drive' it (or so my understanding goes).

Whatever you do make sure it will actually stay stuck to the car. The WTAC guys are making so much downforce that their cars are unstable without it.

I wonder how many people are skirting the edge of ground effect without realising it?

Sailors speak of sailing in the 'Groove', not many people really know what it is or how to find it but I have sailed on a few 12 metre class boats, mastering corporate challanges and team building programs (Kookaburra's 1and 2) and when you hit it, new and old sailors alike fall silent, the experience of 22 tonnes of boat falling into the next level is amazing.
