Helmet and glasses woes!

Is anybody else here a glasses wearer?

I have got a new Bell Motorsport helmet and this helmet is a tighter fit and with padding that comes much further around my face than my old bike helmet. I am finding it next to impossible to wear my glasses comfortably...I just have to kind of cram the arms in to the helmet and try and position the lens bit so I can see properly. This bends the arms and I find that without being able to sit them on my face properly they steam up.

Yes I have tried contacts but I don't seem to get on with them to well.

What has been your solution?

I have an Arai motorsport helmet, and my issue is my glasses fog up with my heavy breathing ! So I don't wear them (I am the one with the white cane sticking out the window tap tapping round the track)

Haha! My optometrist finds it amusing, and perhaps frustrating, that I select my glasses on how well they will fit under my helmet.

I've had to go to multi-focals recently, and the best shape for all this is to go a smaller version of Harry Potter. The negative is that frame is visible in my peripheral vision, but you adapt pretty quickly.

I thought about those sport goggles but you'll have this buckle in the back of your head and the frames are still pretty wide.

Just get some narrow frames that are very flexible. You'll pay a bomb for them, but they'll work well.

Get a guide dog, your lap times will improve astronomically!

I did think about the very thin and flexible frames but I have a feeling I would not be able to stuff the arms down the side of my helmet without them just bending up. My helmet is supremely comfortable and light but is tight fitting, it is like the thing is molded to my head shape.

Hmm that buckle on the back of the goggles would be an issue, would probably have to make a new elastic strap and not have an adjuster.

Good call on the width of the lens bit fitting in to the opening, need to have a measure of that.

If your vision has stabilised ... Lasik eye surgery! My wife just had hers done last Friday after 20 years of wearing glasses to correct her long sightedness. She now has 20/20 vision again. It's not cheap though ... around $6k and you might get $1k back from your health fund. But she reckons it's definitely worth it.

Or take a holiday in Malaysia and get it done there. There are specialist clinics, UK trained doctors, who set up in Johor to target the Singaporean market. My wife had hers done there more than 10 years ago, and going fine.

Are your glasses new too? Not a solution for right now but always take your glasses with you when trying on new helmets.

Not a problem with my motorsports helmet but I know on my daily bike helmet my glasses don't touch my nose. They're suspended in front of my eyes by the arms pressed in against the side of the helmet/my face.

Us Asians with flat noses...that's always the problem.

I wear glasses and just bought a Bell R1 which is way more comfortable then the AGV Titech bike helmet I had-I think your helmet may be too tight as mine is not that tight but doesnt move at all.Bell offer a range of cheek pads-get something thinner and it should solve your problem

I have a bike helmet and just jam the arms in. Works well enough. Although I don't like having the viser down and the glasses on. Usually get away with it.

I'm sort of surprise no one has thought of just putting a seam in the foam along the eye-line to allow arms to reach the ears. Surely that wouldn't impact on the ADR.

consider contacts just for the days on the track then. you can get re-usable ones so you aren't throwing them out all the time or just dailies. I wear mine (monthly cycle lenses) pretty much daily so that I can play sport, ride my bike, drive etc. Really nice to have peripheral vision that is lacking through glasses, plus no helmet woes.

Mate, I used to wear weekly contacts and also dailies, until I got my eyes lasered 4 years ago (best thing I've ever done). My advice on contacts is to persist in trying out a number of different brands and types.

My definite favourite was Acuvue Oasys

The reviews on there from other ppl says it all. They were the most comfortable contacts I ever wore and cost effective too. I used to be able to wear them for 16-18hrs straight with very little discomfort. If you haven't tried those ones in particular maybe they're worth a shot? you can get a trial from your optom. Also, once you've got a prescription, buying contacts online is a piece of cake and is heaps cheaper.
