So just went to feed the pets, and stumbled upon this on my door. Appears as though the paint is literally peeling off in the groove.
The whole bottom part of the door below the first top groove is bumpy. Does this mean the doors had a respray, or is the bumpiness meant to be there?
Is there a way to prevent the paint from slowly chipping/peeling off of the door? Spray on clear coat of some sort?
Bought the car bout a month ago, so still a bit new to it all. I have a feeling the crack in the paint will only get bigger.
I know not much can be done, but I'm in denial to the fact that i might have to give the whole door a respray..
So any help would be appreciated

A red MX5 coming the other way must have RSI by now from all the waving he did.

Re: Paint peeling??
The lower half of the door does have a 'ripple' effect paint coating. I think it is supposed to be a tougher type of paint?
It is hard to tell from the picture, are you sure it is the paint peeling and not the clear coat? Given you are in Melb take the car to The MX-5 Factory aka Oven Baked Enamel in Ringwood. They will check the paint work out for you and give you some options for repair.

Yeah, NA8s all had that tough bumpy coating underneath the enamel on the lower half of the doors. As juffa said it looks like you're losing the clear coat there, MX5 Factory are good for paint and panels. It might be simple if it's caught early.

100% sure it's the paint peeling, but thank you both so much! I didn't even think of asking Dick at the MX5 factory if he'd be able to help. Needing to go there within the next few weeks anywho to change wheel bearings and possible diff too. Hoping it doesn't cost too much though for a quick spray of clear?
Fingers crossed for possible future proofing!
