You should paint it yellow to get sponsorship from a Swiss Cheese company (or Sponge Bob)

I would not waste my time drilling the doors like that, as you will have no roof or windows in your way just gut the doors down to the external skin and weld it in place. No need for it to open unless there is some rule that says you have to keep opening doors. Heck if you have a proper door bar just stretch a bit of vinyl over the opening

Great idea Dann. I would be concerned about the rigidity, for safety but also for handling, if it flexes too much. Particularly if you want to get a stonking time like a 1.05.
Who will pilot the car? Cars are only as quick as the driver ?

I will have the same power to weight. Half the weight.
50 percent more tyre and it will be much softer.
Half the frontal area.
Much more downforce.
Lower CG.
There arent a lot of downsides in comparison except less total hp for top speed.

It’s an ambitious project and definitely won’t be easy to achieve but good on you for having a go at this.
Don’t worry about the naysayers and their pessimistic views. There’s nothing wrong with aiming high.
I’m sure you and the rest of us following the build will all learn plenty along the way.

Like Chris I look forward to seeing if you can do this Dan. In life you learn that you can never achieve anything unless you give it a go.
The best time set at a Club day in an MX-5 is 1:05.50 in a 2B SP. That car had megabucks invested in it.
The fastest time ever recorded by an MX-5 was another 2B SP MX-5 with a time just a couple of 10ths under the 1:05 mark in an open meeting.
Now you asked for what you've forgotten. There’s plenty of turbo lightweight MX-5’s out there producing mega power, running in the mid 1:05’s to 1:06’s that qualify for a specific class of racing. You may want to see if an MX-5 of this build type has a class to run in after the time attack attempt. Some minor changes may make it qualify for class racing of some sort.
