NitroDann's $5000 challenge. 5's for 5.
So Im going to do it, Wakefield Park, 1:05, for 5000 dollars.
It will be a long term project, and anything I already have on hand will be assigned a fair market value, and so will not be just a freebie. So its a project anyone can do, starting with nothing.
Here is my rules:
-5000 dollar cost includes the car, but does not include consumables.
-Safety gear is free, so its not added to the 5000.
-Any mods allowed so long as the scrutineers at a club day will let it run.
-My time counts for nothing, but Ill try to tally it.
-All costs will be freely visible, and everyone is allowed to come in and give me a hard time if you think Im cheating.
Here is what we are starting with-
I purchased it for 1000 dollars, and paid 200 for body repairs to get rego.
Im calling this a 1200 dollar car, and anything sold off if comes off that price, I think this is fair.
So far I sold the diff for 150 dollars. Everything un needed from it will go up for sale and will be subtracted from the cost.
Bring it on place your bets
Everyone get involved and post pics and ideas please, this is a community thread.

Re: NitroDann's $5000 challenge. 5's for 5.
So the basic plan, is sell everything that can be sold and is uneeded so get some money back.
Ill do the cheapest turbo setup I can possibly manage, exhaust components will come from the bin, and to prove Im not cheating they will come from someone elses bin.
Going to go for around 250whp.
700-750kg.
12" slicks, or more.
Probably use either a 1.8L diff, welded or an rx7 diff, whatever comes cheapest.
The car will be a speedster, no windscreen or roof, and the cabin will be covered for aero, and there will be a big brace across the top of the cabin for stiffness and as part of the cage.
Lop the front and rear end off and tube frame it.
Front end like patricks na6, flat floor, rear diffuser, little ducktail (ok.. ok.. HUGE ducktail).
I intend to fabricate some tubular arms, and maybe subframes, with full adjustment.
Holesaw the chassis everywhere and dimple die it.
Expandafoam bag for a seat.
Rear radiator.
You get the idea.
It will just sit in the corner of the shop and get done as the parts and time arise.
Ok, go on point out everything Ive forgotten.

nice work.
i think you can do it.
does it have to be road registered? if not then just get some used slicks!

Cool. Obviously not road registered right?
Do tyres count towards the 5k?

Not rego'd.
Tyres are a consumable. Again though Ill do it as cheap as humanly possible so it might still make it if you include consumables.
The question is will it do 1.05?

But what genuine japanese parts will it run?
Ok I kid I kid.
But honestly this is probably the best thing I have read on cartalk.
I was interested up untill you mentioned turbo setup and speedster then I just went into shock.
I really am looking forward to the progress of this.

i will sit on the floor so only the top half of my head will protrude from the cockpit cover, not crazy tall like this.

I don't know if hole sawing the chassis is a good idea Dann sure it will lighten it but your also making big changes to its strength and integrity

Re: NitroDann's $5000 challenge. 5's for 5.
$5000 is possible. But the dollars add up quick.
My red car is pretty low budget, but at best would owe me $7000 to build it.
I will be going up to wakefield (november) in my red car. Not sure of the time it will do. I bought the car for $500, and although i used the bits from my silver NB8B, i did buy a damaged NB8B for $2750. $600 for full exhaust. $600 for used B.C Coilovers. Hardtop was free. Tyres $1000. Wheels $800. Lightweight flywheel and HD clutch $500? Brake pads $200. Front swaybar $100. Rollbar made by me $150 I think. Seat and harness $450 when new. $250 for wheel alignment/corner weight. $500 changeover open diff 3.6 to 4.3 Torsen.
Minus bits sold from both cars.
I look forward to your build. And I have been watching your $2000 turbo build. The biggest cost is the ecu. Good to see people that can do there own thing, rather than just go online and buy what the market is flogging.

Thanks heaps, I will save th e500 on the clutch and flywheel, exhaust will be free, and my tyres and pads dont count. Also my safety gear doesnt either.
So im pretty keen I reckon its doable !
