se replacement turbo setup, guidance needed..

My se has reached 170k's and I have been told that my turbo should be due to be replaced, how ever I don't just want to replace it with another stock or equivalent turbo. I plan to keep the car for pretty much as long as i can so i want to put some money into it and eventually get some serious power out of it. I've been doing my home work and reading through here and other forums trying to get my head around things and taking notes, feels like I'm back in school :lol: . Most of it sounds like jibberish to me so far :( the more digging I do the more questions i am left with. From my understanding, boost pressure cant really be raised much due to the computer hitting boost cut and that even with a pretty much stock engine setup you really cant go past 150kw with out running into problems.. So what i would like to do is pretty much the bare minimal for now, is it possible to go to a bigger turbo (or better) and run pretty much stock boost settings? I'm talking about replacing the manifold, dump pipe, exhaust, inter-cooler and intake. and just leaving it at that for now?

As for the stuff mentioned above what would be the best to get? I have done allot of looking though nitro dan's build thread, the stuff he puts out is nothing short of art work! does any one know if he sells some of the stuff he makes?

my next question is turbo? I realize it must be asked allot. From looking around, the garret t28 or t25 looks decent to use? I have a mate who can get a hold of some thing through his work for me, i just need to know what would be decent.

Im sorry if these questions have been asked a million times but I'm a little out of my depth and some guidance would be awesome

Garrett turbo conversion will run at lower boost on a stock ECU if an O2 signal modifier is used. Aftermarket ecu, bigger injectors and fuel pump is recommended.

He will make you what you need at a very reasonable price.
At 170,000km though it might be worth thinking about an engine refresh before you start doubling your HP. Much, much cheaper to do now than after there is internal damage done. Ask davekmoore.......
I could be wrong on this as I'm really not sure what other people are getting in terms of engine life from their SE's. I know SP's would be doing it tough at that mileage. SE's do have better internals though.

The engine feels great, the car is high km's but its been looked after and plus more power is while away yet.. The flying miata one looks good but would really like the turbo mounted higher up. What else is out there? Pm'd dan but have gotten no reply. Might go ask questions else where.

Why do you want it mounted higher up? A lower COG is better.

Dann's in the middle of a garage-move at the moment so if you're not in a hurry, try again in a week or so - I'm impressed with what he's done on my car so far.

BEGi is another turbo-kit alternative but their quality is not consistent enough. While they do look after their customers by allowing goods to be returned for re-work, it's not very practical and would be too costly in S&H to Australia. The last thing you want is a kit whose downpipe/exhaust won't line up.

If you want a quality kit with minimal hassle, FM is the way to go - it's not leading edge but their quality is unsurpassed.

Im discussing it with dann... the last thing I want is some thing that goes together very poorly as I don't have alot of time to get it done. How hard would it be to do all this, is it some thing your average joe could do? It doesnt look very hard, its just a matter of unbolting every thing, replacing gaskets and bolting the new stuff on right?

It's do-able if you're determined and have a decent set of tools but be prepared to allow for the fact that you may break a stud which will cause you to explete a LOT of swear words and waste a lot of time. If you're lucky, you'll have all the gaskets required in the new kit or can re-use the existing ones - but don't rely on that last possibility.

They're pretty straight forward and hard to break anything too bad by trying to do it yourself.

In saying that, if you do break something, you may be up for a tow to someone willing to take on a job you've half completed. Finding that mechanic may be a challenge.

I'm not a mechanic, but handy with basics, I've done plenty of bolt on style kits, and r&r'd so many turbos on MX5s I've lost count - If you're somewhat mechanically minded, have the time and the will, I'm sure you'd knock it over.

I have a 1.8 AVO manifold, dump, headshield and uppipe sitting in the shed. Think the turbo manifold is ceramic coated. If you're on a tight budget we could work out a price.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
