Re: Need some help choosing some new wheels, will they fit?
I think you're being too "precious" about your 17" rims
Not precious, just sick of this prevailing attitude
Need to do some research on tyres, rims and suspension. Try reading some of the Keith Tanner books and see how your opinion stacks up against the "opinion" of a MX5 guru.
Don't care and don't need to know as I'm not tracking my car. The OP also didn't ask about track tyres/ wheels either
It's something I've experienced personally as have many other MSM/SE owners, it's not just my opinion.
Again not asked for by OP. Opinions are like a**holes, everyone has one.
I didn't start the conversation about 15" rims - OurCognitiveSurplus initiated it and I fully support his "17" wheels on an NB is just going to wreck it.
His opinion wasn't needed either and wrecking it is such a subjective term. I feel like you are wrecking the looks of your car with the 15's and to some people looks are more important than it's ability on track.
I still haven''t read on the internet about anyone reverting BACK to their 17" rims for track or DD'ing because they preferred them.
There have been many people who have gone from their stock 15's up to 17's and not revert back because they prefer them. Not sure what you are getting at!
You clearly haven't dríven a car with decent coilovers and adjustable damping
Hmmm BC's are quality??? This is the second MX I have had with coilovers. I have also just ordered coilovers for my DD (BC's coincidentally because their cheap). My last 4 cars have also had coilovers. None of them have been as comfortable as stock so to change wheels with comfort as a factor is ironic when you put in more uncomfortable suspension.
Healthy debate is good - Blind faith/belief is not.
Doing things because it is in a book or on a forum is the very definition of blind faith/belief. Here is another saying for you "different people make the world go round".

Aaah fair enough. That makes sense as to why you decided to go to 15's. Comfort/Softness.
I drove my SE down from Maroochydore to Bendigo then Melbourne. 1990km's in 2 days. Even on the crap back roads of Bendigo I found the car firm, yet comfortable/compliant with the SE Bilstein suspension and 17's. Hence why I'm happy with the ride, even more so with the new, lowered suspension. Personally, I couldn't do the squishy 14's or 15's that I trialled on the NA8 (which ran 17's normally). The lack of steering precision I found unacceptable.
Some people it like the soft and comfortable. Good luck to them.
*end of 15" rim talk*
I'd like to see what Mr Sexy found out regarding offsets for the XXR once they email him back.
They are an insanely delicious looking wheel, and nicely priced too

17" wheels are way to big for an mx5, they're ridiculous!

XXR 527 and 535 for me. Coming from Ozzy tyres I would not expect these wheels to have outrageous offset. I'd be thinking about a 35 offset but I could be wrong
Shut up Ryan . Have you been booted out of your JDM club yet?

Unfortunately for you, this "prevailing attitude" was founded from experience by gurus and novices alike, that's why it "prevails".

I'd like to actually ask those same people if they had to do it over again would they prefer a set of 15" Enkeis or 6ULs instead?
New rims and tyres are expensive, they're not something people replace on a whim and it's not uncommon to sell off existing rims to help cover the cost of new rims and tyres so owners are stuck with their 17" rims.
If people buy new 17" rims and tyres, they'll probably hang onto them long enough to get used to them and think that the ride/handling is acceptable.

I carefully chose my words when I made this statement and you misquoted me.
BC Coilovers are a very good budget coilover, hence I used the term "decent".
BC Coilovers feature in many of the Fast Fours & Rotaries cars too - obviously there are a lot of guys with lots of money to spend on cars who feel that they're a decent coilover too.

Agreed, I can't understand why anyone puts any credence in the Bible or Koran (I was raised a Catholic and never understood blind faith - even in kindergarten, it's the engineer in me) but I respect people's religious beliefs (unless they're a fanatic and trying to shove it down my throat).
My thoughts on 17" rims were generated from personal experience and confirmed by many learned/respected gurus when I started researching it so it's not just an opinion or blind faith.

I'm going to leave this subject here because while I can understand people wanting to run 15's you have very little tolerance for anything but. It's like talking to a brick wall. I will leave you with this quote from your last reply "unless they're a fanatic and trying to shove it down my throat"
To the OP - Have you found out the offset yet as I wouldn't mind a new set of 17's

Mods
It may be time to block this thread.
Once someone starts questioning religious beliefs to support their argument in a thread about choosing new wheels, then we have strayed into dangerous territory.
Lokiel wrote:My thoughts on 17" rims were generated from personal experience and confirmed by many learned/respected gurus when I started researching it so it's not just an opinion or blind faith.
Umm, Your thoughts ARE an opinion. How can you confirm a thought, a theory? You can support it. Understand the difference between subjective and objective. Did you ever question why this 15" rim is just for the NA/NB? Why not the NC? Feel free to take this up via PM with me.
Lokiel.
You obviously dislike 17's. THe OP asked for info about 17's. You gave your opinion and denigrated those that do like 17's.
Now stop doing a Morlock and stop trolling this thread.
I want to find out more about the XXR 17's and not about your religious views.

I don't know what model car OP has but;
This^
and this^
wheel offset vs scrub radius

Jeo wrote:17x8.25 +0? What size tyres?
8" wide +0 offset will stick out 69mm further than the 6" wide, and 62mm more than the 6.5" wide.
Have a play here to see what your options are.

Sorry to disappoint you, but like meanmx, I'm leaving this thread because as he said "It's like talking to a brick wall.", he'll NEVER convince me that 17" rims are acceptable on an NA/NB and despite everything I've stated here, it looks like I'll never convince him.
My comments were intended to allow the OP to "choose some new wheels" based on the experience of others, not just looks - he's free to ignore it.

It's your fault. Everyone knows SE's are better than SP's mainly due to the 17" rim
You just have SE envy
