Woodgrain dash

Postby wiz043 » Tue Jun 18, 2013 8:21 pm

I have been reading a few ebay ads (mainly UK & Germany) for wood grain and aluminium look dash panels. It appears that they mainly consist of thick stick on sheets of a plastic type material that just stick on over the existing black finish around instruments, gear shift, radio, air ventilators etc.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these and if they are moulded at the edges to follow the curve of the panels otherwise they would probably look pretty cheap I would imagine.

Would appreciate any advice on these or any other product available to achieve a wood grain or alloy effect and if possible a supplier.

Car is a 1999 NB auto. Twilight blue with grey sheepskin seat covers. Just looking to spruce it up a bit.

I have seen many members cars with an aluminium or timber look dash (and door) upgrade. Can anyone tell me where you can buy these dash kits??

Dash kit on car for sale Carsales..jpg

This is an example of it in wood grain. I can get them overseas but the delivery cost is ridiculous... :( :(

Here's some to look at, the one in Aus is cheap postage but dear buy price.
One of the blokes in the club has it on his clubman and it looks good.

go to ebay motors and type MX5 dash kits

Christ, it looks awful  unless you have a tan interior.

All a matter of taste I guess.

Could you spray the factory dash with silver interior paint to look like alloy?

You can get an alloy kit that may suit the black background better. Just trying to break up all the black on the dash, may look better in aluminium finish.

Thanks for help. 8)

Does his clubman have a tan dash, if so the wood grain would probably look better I suppose. On reflection maybe I am better off with an aluminium finish on the kit because of the black trim on my car.

I will contact the e-bay seller MX5 Mania on Mon. to see if they have a kit for mine. There is a German one on e-bay for $63 but for that price it must be pretty ordinary. The polished polyurethane ones with bevelled edges are the go apparently from my research. Some of the cheaper ones are thin flat sticker type with straight cut edges and I could just imagine how crappy they would look.

Thanks for help. 8)

Wiz, check out jackmack's garage thread, he has the wood trim in his NB8a with black interior. Otherwise PM him.

I got one of the 'dash kits' from mx5parts UK. Pretty sure this is the exact same product. They're only okay. Very hard to stick on because the stickers are flat and the shapes in the car aren't. So they tend to lift a little at the corners. I had a corner lifting a little, then had a spin on the track and go heaps of dust into the car. Dust got under the sticker, now it won't stick at all.

Perhaps if you take more care than I did, they're okay. If I had my time over, I'd spend the extra cash on shaped parts rather than stickers.

Edit:

Pretty sure this is the product: http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/dash-19982000 ... -2664.html I got it in aluminium. I hope I didn't pay that much for it. Certainly not worth anything like $100.

Thanks mate...the ones I am trying to get are polyurethane with bevelled edges and I am finding they are quite expensive from overseas ($180 to $200 delivered.) so I am starting to think they are not worth it unless I can them cheaper in Oz somewhere.

Are you looking at the one from the Ebay link above? Pretty sure that's the same one I got from MX5parts UK. If that's the case, I wouldn't pay that price for that product.

No, the ones I am referring to are by Remin, Sherwood, B & I etc. I checked the website you gave and I don't think their product is very durable as you indicate and it is around $100 as you said.
I have asked a couple of them to send me samples of timber and alloy.
Thanks for info.

Do you have a link?

If it's a good product I'd upgrade mine. Tell me what you think :)
