Burning quite a lot of oil

Postby Tonyger » Sun Jun 16, 2013 10:21 pm

Hi guys,

I've got a nb8a that has done 230 xxx km's and there are no engine mods. For the past few track days at Winton, I have burnt up around 500 ml of oil to do about 35 laps; of which is only probably 12-15 hot laps.

I'm running Royal Purple 10w-40

Is that considered to be normal?

Thanks

Tony

Seems excessive but your engine is well worn. Try a 10W-50 oil like this and see if it helps. http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products.php?id_categ=1&id_brand=1&id_products=2

I usually burn about 200ml at a track day in an engine in excellent condition. I used to burn more until I started only filling it to just 3/4 full and checking after every run or two instead. It might be worth making sure that you've got the right length dipstick in your car. Nearly every MX5 dipstick known to man has been broken and some have been replaced with a wrong one.

X2 with jbt. 10W-50 Penrite HPR10 FTW.
