MX5 mania should know how to tune my NA8 than anybody else in Sydney

great people doesn't always mean great tuners of motor vehicles.

I think it is important that potential customers have information available to help in their decision making processes when selecting where to spend their money.
This is mexiegirls story and I for one appreciate it being told. Others are welcome to post their own threads about the fantastics tunes they have received from mania is they wish.

To me the simple facts tell an interesting story.

Tuner A recommends ECU with options and tunes vehicle. Gets what appears to be good result from dyno but pings and runs badly.
Tuner A tells customer it is normal and to live with it.
Tuner B fixes problems with software within 10 secs and makes privability improvements and is very corteous.

To me it would appear that Tuner B knows how to tune successfully. Tuner A does not.
To me it would appear that Tuner B knows how to work with a customer and provide a good result. Tuner A does not.

Hey there Bigmaxy

Your excatly right and spot on, and yes was a good dyno result for 2 reasons (1) his happy dyno (generous reading) (2) he retard my cams heaps

There is a point that every one has missed though, Andy from Adaptronic is a legend and does have a good product. Also there is a guy on here that has also had a bad adaptronic experience from MANIA too he was more searching for help than having a bitch sesion like me.

:)

People need to be careful talking 'HP for $' and comparing turbos to n/a engines.

Yes, the horses come cheaper via a turbo, but you open cans of worms. No insurance. Can't pass inspection. Potential for defect notices. Can't resell etc. If you want to turbo and get full compliant paperwork, it's going to cost more than $3k.

At least with the n/a route, making the car appear stock is fairly easy (heat shield over the headers, stock airbox - done).

TL;DR - turbo v n/a is more complicated than just $ and horses.

A lot of planning has to go into building an NA and you need to be consider each activity as how it fits in with the final product. First do you want a certain torque curve or do you want outright HP? What will be your final rev limit and how much time will it spend there? All these and many more, not to mention deciding who will be doing the head work etc. Do you go with an off the shelf modified head or give the job to somebody else? You need to have confidence in the person doing the work for you and they need to be able to advise, suggest, recommend and you need to be able to listen, ask questions and do research.

I guess these questions are the same for a FI build, but making a decision error could. It be expensive or limiting as it could be a NA build.

Thankyou for your advice I feel better going down the n/a road now for all of your reasons

I haven't gone through the fancy engine work route, but I've gotten a 15kW gain from 65kW to 80kW. This is from a full exhaust change, doing a DIY CAI and changing timing to 14deg. Altogether, cost me around $1,500 (can't remember anymore). John Keen at Southern Hi-Tech did the dyno for me, and I put a lot of trust in him. When asked about how to get more power but staying N/A, he said it'll be another $3-4k, and only another 10 - 15 kW. So I decided that it'll be it from me in terms of power. It's just not worth it, me thinks.

Very true Zephyrus about the bigger dollars from here, I believe a good air intake is great value for $ too. I think the low pressure (through the firewall ones) are great, sound nice too. If the place that did your exhaust is performace savy maybe they could do what I did and spend $250 on an aluminium intake tube.
And yes trust is an important thing

Glad it all worked out well for you in the end.

I did both myself, so I wouldn't know what the shop price is. But the intake is simple, drill a hole and get some pipes from Bunnings, viola!

Well, if I really, really wanted to, I could throw all my $ to get the power up. But at what cost? I could spend less money and get a car more powerful than that. And it would ruin the MX-5, in my opinion. Ultimately, to each their own.

You would be hard pressed to spend less money and get a quickrr car however.

It isnt about power its about performance.
