Agree - I use the term 'newbies' and not in an offensive manner, lets face it we were all 'newbies' at one stage and they are the ones we have to encourage and look after, extend the 'hand of friendship' and answer if we can any questions they have

I guess 'noob' is just an extension of that, NOT intended to offend anyone

Magpie,

No sheep stations,

But if no one was 'competitive' then we wouldn't bother with timing would we?
You only have to watch the end of a session to see the excitement and anticipation on drivers faces as they go up to the tower to get the time sheets.

I see plenty of competitiveness in the 'regulars' in all groupings.
Whether you are actively participating or not, there is a Club Championship running and some classes are very close and friendly rivalry's are certainly part of the appeal for some.

Group 1 is no different. And the participants in group 1, as the other groups, change most meetings, apart from a core group, so as some people improve their times, they jump groups.
Magpie, if your times meet the criteria, you should run in the correct group for those times. It is safer and better all round for similar timed participants to be grouped together to minimise overtaking.

Magpie, I have come to realise from EVERY forum I am a member of, that the first casualty is spelling and grammar! Forget sarcasm as it NEVER comes across as such and it is guaranteed that someone with take offence. If someone on this forum typed "noob" then I'm positive they meant "newb". And if you get to group 1 then you will be treated as if you belong there. In my time in group 1, there has been some close "sprinting" at times but I have never seen or heard of any instances of contact. Cheers.

She only shot my group and one or two sessions of yours, she's never used that camera, lens or monopod before so she deleted a lot of blurry shots. She really just wanted a sharp shot of me so didn't try for too long on any other cars, and all only from that angle.

I agree with pirate. I've not heard of contact, yet I'm sure its happened elsewhere eg. QR sprint days where crazy Excel drivers are about. But even though both Pirate and I have had some very close encounters, at times driving within 1m of each other (sometimes a lot closer) you quickly get to know who you can be around and respect each others space, have fun and still take your car home straight as a die.

Not saying anything about contact between cars. My point is I guess can be best put by Sid Watkins on a certain race driver: "He had wonderful humility, which is not common amongst racing drivers. He had all the makings of a great man".

D-train I understand your comment in that you need to know who is around you and respect their space. However is it a case of respect earned or respect because of the group they are in? Your logic is why I don't want to be in group 1 (or even the car is capable) because I don't have the experience or the desire so I will be a hindrance and a risk to others.

Mark,

If the times you are doing are good enough to be put into group 1 then you will be fine in Group 1.

Basically it all runs the same no matter what group, line up in roughly seeded order, as we are supposed to do, and with the gaps between cars leaving the pits, around 5 seconds is enough, even if you are 1 second a lap quicker than the car in front you won't catch them until your last lap and then you spend the warm down lap waving to each other and giggling like little school girls.

If your car is quick enough, you won't hold anyone up and you won't be in the way. If someone mauch faster is coming through, you hold your line, point them through the side you want them to overtake you, or coming onto the main straight at either Lakeside or QR, stay driver's left and let them pass on drivers right and you haven't held anyone up.

For the first couple of track days I did I was thrown in into group 2 with a stock 1600 NA and managed to keep out of the way of everyone, so you wont have a problem.

Once the engine is finished and you get used to the car and the times come then you will progress up the groups gaining experience as you go.

Generally Group one is a little better as whilst quick, the times are a lot closer than group 4 where you have first timers through to experienced drivers in slower cars compared to much more modified cars giving a much broader range of lap times in comparison.

Matt
