BC Vs Megan coilovers

Postby Lokiel » Sun May 26, 2013 10:47 pm

Megan coilovers generally have a bad rap in the US and are often confused with the BC coilovers we can purchase here in Australia (and I have on my car).

I've just read a thread on CR.net that contained a useful link explaining the differences:

"First off, the BC and Megan coilovers do have one huge common factor - they are both made by BC. The Megan coilovers are whats known as a stage 1 coilover and the BC offer whats known as the BC stage 2 coilovers.

Both are very similar, and they share some components between both coilover units. However, judging by the differences we have noticed between the coilovers we give the following recommendation:

Megan coilovers - good for light street use. These are good units for people on a budget.

BC coilovers - great for street use, hardcore cornering, and track use. We feel that the BC coilovers are a better quality unit

Heres why we give that recommendation.

Everything on the BC coilovers seems more solid, and better reinforced...."

See http://blog.modernperformance.com/differences-between-bc-and-megan-coilovers for the full write-up.

- Hope that clears up any confusion.

I have considered Megan EZ Streets, but the question is, does a $500 (~40%) or so premium command the difference in performance considering they are manufactured using similar components/from the same factory.

Very questionable as Megan branded ones have been around for at least a couple of years before BC brand.

If this rumour is true, then that means all the "cheapie" coilovers come from the same manufacturer.

A few years ago, there were only D2 and K-Sport, now a quick fleabay search finds a dozen brands, different colours, similar pricing.

Yes because;
it's also development time your paying for similar is not the same.
Built in the same location means nothing, Parts, design, testing and care/ tolerances make the difference not geographical location.

From everything I've read, BC & Megan are made in the same factory, but BC is supposedly the better of the two. Megan appears to have a reputation for the locking collars coming loose and for being noisy. BC reportedly has better internals, better quality components and dyno's their shocks (available on request apparently!). Having only just fitted my first ever set of coilovers (BC's) I cannot as yet comment on quality ...

My old D2s remind me of my current YSRs so much. Almost everything is the same. The D2s were more like the YSR street version, but had the comp version alloy strut feet. And both are similar to current day K-Sport products available.

I would say alot of these products get rebranded over the years. D2 and G4 had such bad reps for product quality. Instead of build a better quality product and trying to get their rep back. Just redesign them and paint them a different colour and add a new name. Job done.

There are also threads a plenty on various car forums on the Pedders coilovers coming from the same factory. Built to the higher BC standards, but to Pedder's own specs ...

No different to many factories worldwide, including here in Australia, who's production lines package the same product, often manufactured to different standards, for different suppliers ... it's called good business.
