Mc5 na 89 wront start

Postby Edgarrr » Tue May 21, 2013 12:25 pm

Hey guys i hadn't dríven my car in about 4 days as its got a coolant leak and was wating to get it fixed. But i decided to drive it a short distance like a 5min drive. Then my cars engine just shutoff 3mins into the drive and now wont start. Checked coolant and oil and there levels were fine. Thought it may have been to low on fuel topped it up still no go. Got mechanic friend to look at the car he believes it is most likely the coil pack. I just want to know before i buy a coilpack is this a common problem?. Any other ideas i should look into before buying a coilpack. Thx for your time.

Probably not this, but if all else fails worth checking:

Re coilpack, try to borrow a known good one to swap in & confirm it's the problem, before buying another one.

Not uncommon on the NA6 - mine went in 2000. Even more common on NB8A.

Yea i cant borrow a coil pack as i don't know anyone that has an na mx5. Thx for letting me know its not uncommon ill probably just give it a shot. If it is the coilpack is it likely to just shutoff the engine while driving ?.

No, the coilpack contains 2 separate coils, individually wired back to the ECU. One coil makes spark for cylinders 1 and 4 and the other does 2 and 3. Normally when coilpacks fail they go slowly, running on 2 cylinders for a while then going back to 4, usually when they cool down a bit. You need to check your fuses and relays in the engine fuse box and in the fuse box beside the accelerator pedal - the MAIN fuse and MAIN (or Fuel INJ) relay are good ones to test. Then look for bad connections in the engine loom plugs. Then check all the engine and chassis earth straps.

It's not impossible but I think failed coilpack is the least likely and most expensive solution.

Usually it causes missing like old spark plug leads, which is also a common problem, but may be this coilpack has gone beyond that. Often what happens with the coilpacks that go is that the one or more of the insides of the turrets burnout where the spark plug lead plugs in.

Also for the list: NA6 also had a separate igniter module; ECU & earthing straps/points.

It is most likely the main ignition relay (green one under the bonnet). There are several threads on here about it, and most times it's been the culprit for sudden loss of spark.

From earlier threads on the Main Relay problem - how to wire a regular 30amp relay in to fix the problem (rather than buying the $150 Mazda part. The relay is black on NA6 and NA8 models and green on NBs, marked Main or EGI from memory:

Magna_Blue wrote:

Just figured out the same thing in my NA8 today. All fuses inside the engine bay and below the dash were OK but no power to the ECU.

It was the Main Relay. That's the big black thing in the main engine fusebox. It is responsible for power to the ECU and a host of engine devices. As it starts to fail it becomes prone to knocks and bumps, e.g. shutting the doors will bring it back to life. I found it virtually by accident when I accidenatlly touched the fusebox and it went click and turned the radiator fan back on.

Try turning the ignition on and off and listening for a soft click. If it doesn't click then try tapping it gently while the ignition's on. If you can't get a click out of it then it's dead.

Mazda part no B6S8 056700-9000 or JE16 056700-8780 for NA8s.

Here y'go.

A = 12V+ output to ECU, injectors, coils, pump, cooling fan relay, etc,
equivalent to pin 87 in a std relay
B = 12V+ input (always hot) from ENGINE fuse under dash,
equivalent to pin 30 in a std relay

C = earth from relay coil
equivalent to pin 86 in a std relay
D = 12V+ input from ignition switch to relay coil,
equivalent to pin 85 in a std relay

In an emergency you can remove the relay and hotwire from pin A to pin B with 30A wire and quickfit connectors

change your sparkplugs!

i moved my car one morning to the back of work and everything was normal. 10 minutes later the car refused to start AT ALL!
after much much effing around and swapping coils and ecu's and tracing voltages through the relays etc....changed the plugs and it started straight up

Also, wreckers/ recyclers as the relay is used in a number of other cars.
