Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
So to revive an old discussion....what are the thoughts here? How do we increase the numbers of mx5’s racing?
There seems to be enormous support of and participation in club/sprint days from the mx5 tribe. I know there is in NSW and it seems there is in QLD too - can't comment on the other states. The club days are fully subscribed and mx5 club numbers are up strongly in NSW in super sprints.
Some of these newcomers must be tempted and wondering what is involved in going door to door racing. The club in NSW is very supportive to the point of sprints, however from there the pathway to racing is not clear. I found it pretty confusing getting started, finding out what series there are, navigating my way through licensing, safety regs, classes. Also, there are naturally concerns about the intensity and safety of the racing, panel damage, logistics etc etc etc etc. I have found the racing community is incredibly helpful and friendly but you have to know who/where to ask, there is no obvious source for information.
There ARE a number of options for taking the next step in NSW from sprints into racing. MRA and FOSC both provide mx5 challenge style categories (although you might run in a mixed grid if there are not sufficient numbers), all at Wakefield or SMP. Also Prod Sports which covers multiple states and tracks (not mx5 specific). So we have various options.
WHAT IS THE POINT OF ENCOURAGING NEWCOMERS? Because more numbers ensures the continuity of these series and my opportunity to go racing. It ensures there are comers of all levels of build, providing good racing whether you are a front runner with a serious build and/or skill, and for the back markers (.....moi... ....). And if participant numbers increase, who knows, we could see events added to the existing series and even new series. I don't think anyone would argue with this logic (….off that....in this forum, anything and everything gets shot down. All in good fun! ).
The question is how do you get more people involved? My experience tells me make more information available, somehow. Marquees at sprint days offering information? Phone and email contacts for questions/ info? Go to person in the state clubs specifically for racing information. Dunno.

Yep. Consistently clear and current information would be good.
Perhaps the regional mx5 clubs could dedicate a web page with the all known options for each state?

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Basically if the car is eligible for super sprints its eligible for door to door,
I think most people who do sprints, drive their cars on a daily, and are intimidated by the thought of getting their pride and joy damaged.
The reality is door to door at MRA, FOSC has very minimal damage. Guys up the back nearly never have damage, the front runners with a bit more coin will rub a little more.
I run door to door and i have had a few tiny" incidents mainly in super TT. The mx5 challenge events are very tame in comparison mainly because the speed is very similar between cars. The other reality is the wakefield track is a relatively low speed track.
It would be awsome to see the mx5 club come on board and start supporting the door to door community a bit more. They seem to support the supersprints quite enthusiasticly. My other belife is they want to keep the super sprinters and don't want their numbers to drop by guys going to door to door.
A few years back the mx5 challenge was booming, even last years state titles there were 20 something cars, this year numbers are way down. People seem to think also costs are too high!. Well if i can do it u can lol, I set of khumo trededs will last all year mayby 2. I have never recieved damage in the mx5 challenge!! And i race pretty close. But the guys are all mates in the pits and we want to keep it that way . As for tt well a rub here and there will happen!! vast speed difference on straights!!
Mayby a pamplet on how to is whats necessary, or even a come try day!! Supersprints are like qualifing... which is fun, but the racing is 10 times more exciting!! A race licence is as simple as $100 bucks and a trip to the doc for $50 and your away! Half cage for $600 (BD) some stickers, kill switch and seat and harness. Literally u could buy a 1600 for 2k as a wreck, throw a seat, harness, cage etc and go racing for less than 5k!! Ill even build it for u if u give me the cash lol. I bought mine for 2k, stripped it sold the parts i stripped out and it nearly paid for itself!!
Next MRA event (all british) june 30 or if thats too soon mra rd4 in oct to get ready for 2014 i rekon the mx5 car club should throw a MX5 car cruise to goulburn, meet up in syd somewhere and all cruise down to watch fellow mx5ers running door to door see if we cant spread the bug Be awsome to see a few dozen mx5's in the carpark, and they can also see what the race guys get up to!! Racing doesnt start til 9am usually so 6-630 departure would have everyone there in time to see some racing... Just a thought

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
So, is today the start to a resurrection of the mx5 racing scene ??
QR, 11 mx5's out of 14 runners,
Wakefield 17?? runners in both the 1 hour and the mx5/tt ?? races.
So will Prodsports finally have a good think about what makes up the majority of runners.
I don't mind the corvettes, porsches and lotus powered lotus running but Moslers, Ginetta's etc.
Well lets see and hope.
See ya at the 1 hour

Yep, would be nice if prod sports got sensible about what is on the field as competitor cars... It wouldn't be that hard to organise a more fair playing field.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
I was out QR for the rad times drift event on the tarmac area behind the food hall dubbed short track.
I popped ny head over the hill and to my excitement I saw a heap of mx5 s racing around qr with a 911 and two corvettes breaking up the miata hoarde. had no idea what event it was but it was entertaining. then the excel cup in the afternoon was hilarious.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Excel Cup is exciting racing!! The guys have really lifted their game and the presentation of the cars is great!! Full field each meet of 24 max, so there are others who just can't get a run as yet!! That's what I call popular!
