Standard valve springs, how much can they handle

Postby motomenace » Fri May 17, 2013 8:46 pm

Hi all,

Just interested in finding out how much the standard valve springs can handle, in relation to upgrading the cams. On a na 1.8 bp motor hla.

9mm lift about all they can take??

Im looking at these to get good midrange with a steady improvement to the redline.

in ex in ex i lift e lsa
Advertised 260˚ 262˚ @ 0.050'' 215˚ 219˚ 8.4mm 9.1mm 110˚

or should i go 264in 264 ex @ 0.050'' 221 221 9.0 9.0 110

Race only but dont want to increase the redline. As the motor is its basically a stock bottom end with minor head work making 95kw atw and redline set to 7700rpm.

Ill be happy with a tad over 100kw but want significant torque increase in the middle rpms

Cheers

After market ECU? My engine build is using 288 deg cams.

Yeah, running a crappy wolf 3d for now should do the job

will get an adaptronic later on. Have intentions of running itbs at a later stage. Wish they would change the rules so i can run a turbo, soo much cheaper lol

...or a Megasquirt PNP2 and run the ITBs earlier with the money saved.

NO MEGA SQUIRT lol

Adaptronic all the way.. Money not the problem like seeing what each mod does individually for future reference :)

ITBs atm from the states brand new only 700 for the 1.8 :)

Not much. Let's face it. NA8 valve springs will be pretty well stuffed by now. They're anything up to 20 years old. They get weak. Often they can't even handle red line on a stock motor any more. You'll need a new set anyway. Just buy a set that meets the cams and max rpm you're aiming for.

http://www.performancesprings.com.au/index.html for what most of the racers here use. Otherwise spend more for less from Eibach, Supertech, FM, etc.

In that case, buy a MS3 Pro and get a better ecu and still save money.

G,

I have no interest in a mega squirt.

All our cars run adaptronic, which are great ecu's and we have no issues.
Also Andy is very good with customer service and attends races with us in support and development.
If i wanted to go out and spend ridiculous money on a comp id go motec, haltec, autronic, theres 5 or 6 id choose before running a megasquirt!!
My tuner prefers adaptronic, which also make the decision even easier.
And its an AUSTRALIAN developed ecu. Hence my support to the product.

Magna, think ill just go supertec and run the retainers the cam shop supllies?? Redline will stay at 7700rpm as i really want more midrange from the engine rather than peak top end power!! Hence why im not choosing super aggressive cams!

Cheers

Issues. Check the warning in the last line of Emilio's listing for them. http://949racing.com/supertech-valve-sp ... miata.aspx

If changing camshafts and springs. Might as well convert the lot over to a solid lifter setup.

Why buy cams if not looking at increasing max power rpm?

Fair bit of cost going solids.
Cams can change engine performance where you want it, that is not always increasing rpm range.
