Any downsides to using one of these instead of a conventional tandem trailer?

their own words of:
please note dolly trailers / gypsy trailers with no brakes can only tow 750 KGS incl the weight of the trailer and load, just like a small box trailer, most small cars weight is higher than 500 kgs and remember the dolly is 250 kgs to start with .)

Get caught in a accident you will get no insurance if the trailer and car weight is more than 750 kgs and you have no brakes on the trailer

We do stock extras for this trailer if required......wheel tie downs $65.00 a pair, magnetic lights for towed vehicle with plug on rear of dolly $120.00


Also what is the angle of the loading ramps, it would appear from the pictures that the ramp angle would be too steep to get a lowered MX5 on.

It's almost the same price as a whole trailer and you only get half a trailer..

Some good points well made, thank you. Although there is another one which says it's low and can pull large 4x4s and has brakes, I'll give these a miss.

i've seen better. other i've seen only have the base 15-20cm off the ground, this one is very high. and what vehicle do the expect you can carry thats under 500kg?

No idea if there is any truth to it but I have read that using a dolly tow rig requires the car being towed to be road legal.

They are only any good to you if your car is drivable, you cant use it to get home if you stack it or spit the diff all over the ground.

Trailers vary massively in price. You can get a decent tilting trailer from about $2,500 but at this price they tend to be very heavy....like 600KG+ heavy.

The placard weight of my trailer is 300kg, real weight is probably less than 350. It's not pretty, but I didn't want to pay for pretty.

Here is my tilt trailer, the ramps are stored under the trailer and are longer than normal to allow a shallow loading angle. The doors can be opened when it is on the trailer.

Only comment on this is that you can not open the doors when it is being loaded, plus the high rise otion is needed so you can open the doors when loaded.

Don't know why you laddies, don't man up and build your own :mrgreen: Thought it would take me a couple of weekends.
Good fun building it. You can get quite, well priced trailer kits online now. Think I was all done and dusted for around the $1500 mark.
BTW, IMO single axle is much better for towing with a light track car. All up trailer and the car about 1300 kg.

Springs, electric brakes. Rego is cheap in Brisbane. If it's under 2500kg, pretty much a tick and flick at the Dept Transport.
Around $1500-$1800. Depends what you can get for free etc, steel paint...
Would make it smaller, lighter and tip, if I was to build it again. Maybe full Alloy.
Electric brakes are tops, but a PITA to wire into your tow truck and if your mates want to use the trailer, they have to use your truck or have a electric brake controller in there's.

Ill go with a brake booster and falcon hubs/brakes cos they are almost free.

Also about 2/3rds as heavy as your frame.
